The life and work of late artist Clemens Hasengschwandtner were celebrated in Valletta yesterday evening, with friends, collectors and members of the artistic community gathering for a special one-night exhibition.Titled ‘A Life Diary’, the exhibition was held at DOMA on St Paul Street on 30th August, bringing together 12 works permanently housed at the space alongside several pieces loaned by friends and collectors for the occasion.A self-taught artist with a distinctive visual style, Hasengschwandtner became known for his bold black lines, blocks of colour and figures and faces shaped more by emotion than anatomy.His work also became closely connected with Birgu, where his wine bar and gallery Il-Forn helped establish his presence within the local artistic community.Rather than serving as a traditional retrospective, A Life Diary was conceived as a tribute to Hasengschwandtner and the legacy he left behind.For the evening, DOMA’s adjoining garage was transformed to showcase additional borrowed works, while guests gathered for drinks and a short address. Many of those attending had known Hasengschwandtner personally and continue to preserve his work and memory.The exhibition was curated and produced by Chris Briffa, a friend and long-time collector of Hasengschwandtner’s work.•
