A one-size-fits-all approach will not work. For instance, a student good in sports and games can be motivated to pursue a degree or post graduate degree in physical education and become a physical education teacher. He can maximise his potential and earn more nominal income as time progresses.S RamakrishnsayeeChennaiQuality teachers neededReform in the education system should primarily aim at the overall improvement of students’ performance by strengthening their aptitude, not only in academics but also in sports and co-curricular activities. To achieve this, the role of well-qualified and trained teachers is paramount. Teachers must be equipped to impart education effectively, reducing students’ dependence on private coaching as an alternative. In short, teaching and learning should be engaging and stress-free, thereby helping to prevent school dropouts. A major step in this direction is the establishment of teacher training centres, with periodic refresher courses to familiarise teachers with modern teaching methods and emerging educational practices.Rajiv MagalHalekere Village, KarnatakaFlood managementWith reference ‘Nepal floods: lessons in managing Himalayan rivers’ (August 31), the recurring disasters in the Himalayan region underline the limits of conventional flood management. Changing rainfall patterns, glacial risks and rapid development have made the challenge more complex. Nepal and neighbouring nations must strengthen real-time monitoring and scientific assessment of vulnerable river basins. Infrastructure planning should take local geography and environmental risks into account. Since Himalayan rivers cross national boundaries, regular data-sharing and institutional cooperation are essential.SM JeevaChennaiPublished on August 31, 2026Sign into Unlock benefits!Access 10 free stories per monthAccess to comment on every storySign up/Manage to our newslettersGet notified by email for early preview to new features, discounts & offers${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
