For years, VERONICA NAKIYINGI aka Vinka has watched the music industry from behind the scenes, first as a dancer and later as an artist manager. Last Friday, she stepped into one of the biggest moments of her career, headlining her own concert. The Vinka Live & Loud concert was at Lugogo Cricket Oval and she did amazingly well. Quick Talk met with the singer to talk about her journey into music, the lessons that have shaped her, as well as the fame, family and what comes next. Vinka, who is the woman behind the stage name? Behind Vinka is Veronica Nakiyingi, a mother, businesswoman and woman who works extremely hard behind the scenes. She is grounded, deeply loyal to her family and team, and much calmer than the fiery performer you see under the lights. What was Vinka like, growing up? I was definitely the energetic, dance-loving child who could not keep still. I would not say I was looking for trouble, but I was definitely stubborn about my passion for music and dance. Whenever there was a performance at school or in the neighbourhood, I was right in the middle of it. When you were growing up, did you ever imagine you would one day have thousands of people singing your songs back to you? I always dreamt of being in entertainment, but having an entire stadium or arena sing my lyrics word for word, still feels surreal. Starting out behind the scenes as a dancer and later as an artist manager, I watched it happen for others [she initially was managing Irene Ntale at Swangz Avenue, before she switched roles and started singing around the same time Ntale left]. To experience it as the lead artist is a true blessing. You have quite a distinct personality on stage. Are you the same Vinka when the music stops? On stage, Vinka is bold, edgy, high-energy and completely unleashed. Off stage, Veronica is much quieter, laid-back and loves simple moments at home with family. Once the boots and stage makeup come off, I flip the switch back to peace and quiet. What is one thing people assume about you because you are famous, that is completely wrong? People often think I’m intimidating or unapproachable, because of my fierce stage persona and raspy tone. In reality, I’m very friendly and love a good laugh. You have performed at many shows over the years. What made this one different for you? This was my maiden headline concert. Every stage I’ve stepped on over the years was preparation for this moment. Live & Loud wasn’t just another show. It was a celebration of my entire journey, my growth and the incredible bond I share with my fans. Who’s on your dream collaborator list? I love dynamic stage energy, so sharing the stage with fierce African female powerhouses like Yemi Alade or Tiwa Savage would be electric. Locally, having colleagues who have walked this journey with me step up to share the stage, would make the moment complete. You have had a lot of support from many different corners of Uganda. What has it been like having all these brands come on board and support you? It was deeply humbling. Having industry giants step up to back this vision means everything. They celebrate the way people enjoy themselves and come together. It feels very close to who I am as an artist. I am all about authenticity. They don’t try to change who I am. They empower me to bring maximum energy to my craft and my fans. What is your biggest guilty pleasure when you are off duty? Binge-watching reality TV shows, or enjoying a good meal with a cold drink while doing absolutely nothing all day. What is one thing you cannot leave the house without? My phone, my lip gloss and a pair of statement sunglasses. Take Quick Talk back to the moment you knew music was not just a hobby anymore. The turning point was transitioning from managing artists at Swangz Avenue to stepping into the recording booth myself and hearing my first hit on the radio. The hardest lesson the industry has taught me is consistency. Trends change, but staying disciplined and true to your work ethic is what builds longevity. What scares Vinka? Not fulfilling my full potential or looking back and wishing I had taken bigger risks. That’s why I push myself hard every single day. What is the funniest thing a fan has ever done or said to you? I once had a fan jump onto the stage mid-performance, not to hug me but to ask if he could dance as my backup dancer right there on the spot. And he actually knew all the choreography! After the concert, what is next for Vinka? Are we getting new music, more shows…? Live & Loud was just a major milestone, not the finish line. You can expect fresh music, big international collaborations and an expansion of my brand beyond music. Outside of being an artist, I’m leaning more into my role as a lifestyle influencer, expanding my business ventures and continuing strong partnerships to create meaningful experiences for young Ugandans.
