Gozitan activist Luke Said has taken his opposition to a fresh planning application directly to the site, posing outside the property with a sign reading: “In case you forgot, this is Outside Development Zone.”The application, PA/05649/26, was submitted by Ronnie Camilleri, a cousin of Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, and proposes a new 95-square-metre residence behind a garage currently being constructed on the site. Less than 1% of the proposed home would fall within the development zone.Said said campaigners had already fought an earlier application for a large garage on the same site, only to now face a fresh proposal for a home overlooking the Ramla valley.He also pointed towards the wider scale of development in Gozo, saying 15,017 new residences were approved on the island between 2012 and 2026. According to Said, Gozo had around 25,070 homes in 2011, meaning the approvals represent an increase equivalent to around 60% of that housing stock.While acknowledging that Gozo’s population and economy have grown, Said argued that infrastructure and planning have failed to keep pace, questioning why development continues to push into ODZ land.“Do we truly have no other spaces within the development zone where one can build?” he asked.Nadur Deputy Mayor Kevin Curmi has also spoken out against the application, saying: “The destruction of the Gozitan countryside continues.”Curmi recalled how a permit for a garage on the site was approved two years ago despite opposition. He said that what started with a garage has now been followed by an application for a house “completely in ODZ”.The application remains at an early stage, with objections open until 22nd September and no final decision yet taken.•
