No scripts, no rehearsed dialogue and no knowing exactly what’s going to happen next, Improvizza! Malta Improv Festival is returning to Valletta this September for its biggest edition yet.Taking over Spazju Kreattiv from 16th to 19th September, the four-day festival will bring together improvisers, teachers and performers from Malta and around the world for a packed programme of workshops and live performances.First launched in 2022, Improvizza! is now entering its third edition, continuing its mission to introduce international improvisational theatre to Maltese audiences while connecting local performers with the wider global improv community.And if you’ve never watched improv before, the clue is in the name, absolutely nothing is scripted.Characters, relationships, dialogue and entire stories are created live on stage by performers in the moment, meaning no two performances can ever be exactly the same.While improv boasts a thriving scene internationally, it remains relatively unfamiliar to many Maltese audiences, and organisers want to show that there’s much more to the art form than the short comedy games people might associate with it.This year’s festival will feature 15 workshops led by an international line-up of improvisers and teachers, covering everything from long-form storytelling and character work to physical performance, directing and even musical improvisation.Once evening rolls around, attention turns to the stage.Three live improvised performances will take place every night, with international troupes and artists appearing alongside teacher ensembles and workshop showcases.The festival is also developing into an international meeting point for the improv community, with participants travelling to Malta to train, perform and exchange ideas.For Maltese performers, meanwhile, it offers the chance to work directly with international teachers without having to travel overseas for training.Improvizza! 2026 is supported by Arts Council Malta and forms part of Spazju Kreattiv’s theatre programme, with the Valletta venue having hosted the festival since its first edition.It is also supported by VisitMalta, Creative Europe Desk Malta, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, KM Malta Airlines and Valletta Stay.Improvizza!
