Volunteers have cleared a shocking assortment of rubbish from St Peter’s Pool after footage highlighting the mess left behind at the popular swimming spot sparked concern.The Coast is Clear Foundation said it teamed up with the Marsaxlokk Local Council to act swiftly following videos showing the state in which the iconic spot had been left.“Visit Malta and respect it,” the foundation said as it shared footage from the clean-up. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)The operation didn’t stop at clearing rubbish from the rocks, with volunteers taking to the water to clean both the coastline and seabed.Foundation founder Mark Galea Pace teamed up with former water polo players Victor Fenech and Sean Rizzo, who snorkelled along the coast collecting rubbish, while Galea Pace and Toby worked beneath the surface to clear waste from the seabed.Among the items recovered were plastic cups, beach shoes, disposable vapes, masks, towels, beer cans, bottles and even discarded swimwear.Perhaps most shocking, however, was what the foundation described as a large number of women’s sanitary pads found during the clean-up.The team was equipped for the underwater operation by Watercolours Dive Centre.St Peter’s Pool, located on the Delimara peninsula near Marsaxlokk, is one of Malta’s best-known natural swimming spots and attracts large numbers of visitors during the summer months.The clean-up has once again put the spotlight on a simple message for anyone enjoying Malta’s coastline: whatever you bring with you, take it back with you.What do you make of the amount of rubbish collected?Video credits to @coastisclearfoundation•
