Two separate faults on Gozo’s high-voltage electricity network have been identified after a widespread power cut plunged several localities into darkness on Friday evening, including Xagħra during its pre-festa celebrations.Enemalta has confirmed that two separate faults affecting 33kV underground cables were responsible for electricity supply interruptions across a number of areas in Gozo.The outage made itself particularly felt in Xagħra, where crowds celebrating ahead of the locality’s upcoming feast suddenly found themselves in darkness, with people turning on their phone torches to illuminate the streets.In its first update following the disruption, Enemalta said its technical teams had begun fault-location works to pinpoint the exact locations of the two underground cable faults.Additional engineers and technicians were also deployed from Malta to Gozo, while generators were brought in to support electricity supply and minimise disruption to affected residents.However, with both faults still requiring repairs, Enemalta warned that electricity supply would have to be temporarily managed across the affected parts of the island.This means residents may see their electricity return before going out again, as the available supply is distributed between different areas of Gozo while repair works continue.Enemalta subsequently identified the first fault in Xewkija, where repair works are currently underway. Excavation works began allowing technical teams to carry out the necessary repairs.And in its latest update, issued on Saturday morning, the company confirmed that technicians had now also located the second fault.The second fault was found in Comino, close to Enemalta’s Distribution Centre, with equipment and resources now being mobilised to the site for repairs to begin.Meanwhile, work on the first fault in Xewkija remains ongoing.Electricity supply across the affected areas has therefore not yet returned to normal, with Enemalta continuing to temporarily manage the available supply while crews work on both faults.Customers in affected areas could consequently continue experiencing periods of restored electricity followed by further interruptions.The disruption began on Friday evening, when Enemalta’s outage map showed a major high-voltage outage affecting a large section of central and western Gozo, with areas around Victoria, Xagħra, Żebbuġ, Għarb, Sannat and Xewkija among those impacted.Enemalta said all available resources are being mobilised in an effort to fully restore the island’s electricity supply as quickly as possible.Did this power cut affect you?Screenshots taken off Enemalta’s Facebook page•
