Getting around Walt Disney World has always required at least a little planning, but several recent transportation changes could make that planning even more important.Over the past few months, Disney has introduced new restrictions affecting buses and water taxis departing Disney Springs. Buses, boats, and the Skyliner remain major parts of getting around the resort.However, guests visiting over the coming months should know that some of the old transportation strategies may no longer work exactly as they remember.Disney Springs Transportation Now Comes With New RestrictionsOne of the biggest transportation changes of 2026 affects guests trying to leave Disney Springs for a Disney Resort hotel.Beginning June 28, Walt Disney World started restricting access to resort buses and water taxis departing Disney Springs.Guests must now show that they are staying at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel or have a qualifying reservation at a resort before entering the bus area or boarding resort water transportation.Guests may be asked to provide proof of a Disney Resort stay, dining reservation, or qualifying experience reservation.That means the Disney Springs transportation hub can no longer be used as freely for resort hopping.Previously, an off-site guest could potentially arrive at Disney Springs and use Disney transportation to visit a resort for shopping, dining without a reservation, or simply exploring the property.That strategy has become much more difficult.Cast Members can verify qualifying reservations before allowing guests to use those transportation options from Disney Springs.There is another important distinction here: Disney Springs does not offer direct buses or boats to the four theme parks.The new restriction specifically involves transportation departing Disney Springs for Disney Resort hotels.Guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel can continue using the service. For off-site visitors without a qualifying resort reservation, however, Disney Springs is no longer the easy starting point for resort hopping that it once was.Boat Transportation Has Faced Several DisruptionsThe new Disney Springs rule isn’t the only transportation development involving Walt Disney World’s boats.Several water transportation routes have faced temporary changes because of maintenance and refurbishment projects.One of the most recent involved the FriendShip boat dock shared by Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort.The dock experienced maintenance closures extending through late August, temporarily removing a convenient transportation option for guests staying in the EPCOT resort area.The good news is that the closure has now ended.The Yacht and Beach Club boat dock has reopened, restoring FriendShip boat transportation from the resorts.That’s particularly useful for guests staying in this section of Walt Disney World.Credit: Brian Holland, FlickrFriendShip boats provide another option for traveling toward EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios without relying entirely on buses or walking.But elsewhere at Walt Disney World, another major boat route is still dealing with refurbishment work.Sassagoula River Cruise Service Remains AffectedGuests staying around the Disney Springs resort area have faced a much larger water transportation interruption this summer.Refurbishment work along the Sassagoula River Cruise route has temporarily affected water taxi transportation serving several resorts.The route normally provides guests with a relaxing alternative to buses when traveling between Disney Springs and nearby resorts, including Disney’s Port Orleans Resort and Disney’s Old Key West Resort.During the refurbishment, however, affected guests have needed to use Walt Disney World bus transportation instead.The project is expected to wrap up very soon.With August coming to an end, the Sassagoula River Cruise could return any day now. Still, guests shouldn’t assume boats are operating until Disney officially restores service.For the moment, buses remain the safer transportation plan.The situation also shows how quickly transportation options can change during a Walt Disney World vacation. A resort may normally offer boat transportation, but construction, weather, maintenance, or operational issues can temporarily make buses the primary alternative.And buses have recently been needed for another transportation problem as well.Disney Skyliner Guests Recently Faced Major DelaysThe Disney Skyliner has become one of Walt Disney World’s most important transportation systems since opening in 2019.The gondola network connects Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT’s International Gateway with Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Riviera Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.For guests staying at those hotels, the Skyliner can eliminate the need to board a bus when heading to two of Walt Disney World’s four theme parks.But like any transportation system, the Skyliner can encounter operational problems.Earlier this month, an issue involving the loading process resulted in significant delays and long lines for guests.The disruption stretched on for hours and became substantial enough that Disney dispatched backup buses to help move resort guests who otherwise would have relied on the Skyliner.For guests caught in the situation, that meant a transportation system designed to make getting around Walt Disney World easier suddenly required a much longer wait.Now, another development suggests Disney is preparing for work at one of the system’s stations.Credit: DisneyDisney Files New Skyliner Construction PermitDisney has filed a new construction permit connected to the Skyliner station outside Disney’s Hollywood Studios.The permit points toward upcoming work at the station and calls for labor, materials, and electrical work.However, the filing doesn’t reveal exactly what Disney plans to change.The project could involve routine maintenance, electrical work, repairs, upgrades, or other improvements to the station.There is also no confirmation that the permit has anything to do with the loading problems guests experienced earlier this month.Still, the timing is notable.Disney already has a much larger Skyliner shutdown scheduled for early next year, meaning additional maintenance work is coming to the transportation system regardless of what happens with the Hollywood Studios permit.Disney Skyliner Will Completely Close in JanuaryWalt Disney World has already confirmed its next system-wide Disney Skyliner refurbishment.The entire Skyliner network will close from January 24 through January 30, 2027.During that period, guests staying at resorts normally served by the gondola system will need to use alternative transportation.Disney will provide complimentary bus transportation while the Skyliner is unavailable.For guests considering a stay at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Riviera Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, or Disney’s Art of Animation Resort during those dates, the closure is particularly important.Easy Skyliner access is one of the biggest transportation advantages of staying at those hotels.Without the gondolas running, travel patterns will change significantly for guests heading toward EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.The newly filed Hollywood Studios construction permit could potentially be connected to preparations for future maintenance, although Disney has not confirmed a relationship between the permit and January’s scheduled closure.Either way, Disney clearly has more work ahead for the Skyliner.Disney Transportation Is Going Through a Busy StretchTaken individually, none of these developments completely changes how guests get around Walt Disney World.Together, however, they show just how much is happening with Disney transportation right now.Disney Springs now has tighter rules governing who can use resort buses and water taxis. Guests without a Disney Resort stay or qualifying reservation can no longer rely on Disney Springs as an easy gateway for resort hopping.Meanwhile, boat transportation has experienced multiple interruptions.The Yacht and Beach Club FriendShip dock has finally reopened following maintenance, while the Sassagoula River Cruise remains affected by refurbishment work as August comes to an end.Then there’s the Disney Skyliner.The gondola system recently experienced significant delays that forced Disney to bring in backup buses. A new construction permit has now been filed for the Hollywood Studios Skyliner station, and the entire network will close for one week in January 2027.For guests, the biggest takeaway is simple: having a backup transportation plan is becoming increasingly important.Disney buses continue to fill that role whenever boats or the Skyliner become unavailable. That will happen again during January’s scheduled Skyliner refurbishment, when thousands of resort guests will temporarily lose access to the gondola system.Transportation remains one of Walt Disney World’s biggest conveniences, but when, where, and how guests can use certain options continues to change.Anyone visiting during the remainder of 2026 or early 2027 may want to check the latest transportation information before heading out.
