The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is honestly the most fun mobile device I've ever used. If there were such a metric as “fun-per-portability,” I'd place the Galaxy Z Fold 8 quite high, just below — and sometimes even on the same level as — dedicated portable gaming consoles. It's a fantastic tablet, too.However, yesterday I witnessed something that reminded me of Samsung's imperfect history with foldable devices, its rushed launches of the past, and the inherent risks of this technology: A friend's Galaxy Z Fold 4 inner display failed before my eyes. A black line appeared across the hinge area of the display, and the touch controls died.It was tragic, but at the same time, kind of expected? I have to paint the full picture. It was the Fold 4, which is already old, and this particular unit was quite tired after years of not-so-careful use.More importantly, the screen protector had already been bubbling for about a year before this happened. So, as much as it hurts to admit it, the owner had plenty of time to replace the screen protector for relatively cheap and perhaps even avoid this catastrophic failure.Still, seeing a foldable display fail just like that, right before my eyes, reminded me why I've remained reluctant toward this technology all these past years. And the only thing I can think about right now is this: I sure hope Samsung's latest foldable display advancements, such as Flex Titanium, are the final pieces we need to make foldable panels truly reliable.My Galaxy Z Fold 8 must survive because I can't go back!My biggest fear now isn't that my Fold 8 will break. It's that if it does, I'll have to go back to a slab-type device. Without trying to sound too dramatic, I really think the Fold 8 has spoiled me, and I don't even want to imagine having to use a regular, non-foldable phone as my daily driver again.It didn't take long for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to become my favorite mobile device once I got it, and it's been growing on me ever since. I will admit that the thought of my Fold 8's inner screen failing one day is unpleasant.But here's the good news: It was an old, tired Fold 4 that reminded me of Samsung's past shortcomings, not the Fold 8 itself.In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels so solid that I hadn't thought about screen failures at all until I saw that Fold 4 fail. I just hope it stays that way. I've already gotten so used to the versatility of my Fold 8 that I will most likely never want to go back to a slab-type phone by choice.Hopefully, Samsung and my Fold 8 won't force my hand. And hopefully, 2026 is the year foldable phones finally lose their stigma.Seeing that old Fold 4 fail was scary, but I also have to keep in mind that my Galaxy Z Fold 8, thankfully, hasn't let me down once. It's also a much newer device than the Fold 4, with significant upgrades to the foldable display structure.Ironically, I suppose it's also encouraging that Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone this year, powered by Samsung Display.
