Electric vehicles are considerably heavier than their petrol-powered counterparts, mainly because of the added weight of their battery systems. According to recent European Union data, plug-in hybrids are the heaviest, followed by fully electric cars, while combustion-only vehicles remain the lightest. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has also proposed giving used EV batteries a second life by using them for home energy storage, potentially improving the sustainability of electric mobility.
