Ukrainian Defense Forces units have begun testing new robotic turrets equipped with Kalashnikov-system assault rifles in combat conditions on the front line. The strike systems were developed based on technical specifications provided by Brave1, a defense innovation cluster, received grant funding, and required less than six months from initial concept to working prototype. The system is built on a four-wheel chassis with airless tires and features a protected body designed to resist shrapnel, bullets, and punctures while allowing maneuverability for whatever obstructions the battlefield may have to offer.The firing module uses a dual turret configuration capable of mounting two assault rifles simultaneously, significantly increasing firepower density during assault and defensive operations against enemy infantry. The turret can be mounted on other wheeled and tracked ground robotic systems as well. I see some similarities with the Ukranian Combat Robot MOROZ that I wrote about back in 2024, which used a 7.62x51mm machine gun - possibly an FN MAG?Two AKs may seem like a lot of firepower, unless they can carry more than standard magazines; 60 rounds seem like a lot of wheels for almost any task.Several Ukrainian Defense Forces units are already testing these systems in actual combat conditions. Confirmed cases exist of successful deployment by the Security Service of Ukraine's Special Operations Center "A" against enemy ambushes involving drone-based waiting tactics.The design choice to use standard Kalashnikov rifles carries practical advantages. Using standard Kalashnikov assault rifles makes it possible to reduce production costs and rapidly scale the deployment of ground robotic systems on the front line. The AKs are the most widely distributed assault rifle system across Ukrainian military inventory, simplifying logistics and ammunition supply chains.This development arrives within a broader pattern of battlefield mechanization that observers increasingly compare to dystopian military science fiction. Ukraine is shifting battlefield operations toward robotic assault and support missions as systems such as Ratel H, TERMIT, Droid TW 12.7 and KRAMPUS (a mobile robotic flamethrower) increasingly replace soldiers in high-risk frontline tasks.Ukraine plans to roughly double its procurement of unmanned ground vehicles in 2026, with machines now carrying electronic warfare suites, radar, missiles, and mortars in addition to traditional logistics and demining roles. This trajectory reflects a transition from human-centric to machine-centric combat operations where remotely operated or autonomous systems increasingly occupy positions that historically required soldiers in direct fire. The Ministry of Defense stated the goal is for robotic systems to assume the most dangerous tasks on the front line, minimizing the presence of infantry in areas of direct fire contact to reduce risks and preserve soldiers' lives.
