Michigan Stadium – the home of the Wolverines – is one of the most iconic venues in collegiate sports. Opened in 1927, it has house Michigan’s college football program for almost a century.Michigan has followed other NCAA teams in landing new sponsorshipGettyBut the 107,601-capacity stadium – the largest in the country – is vastly outdated, and has fallen behind the wave of new, state-of-the-art stadiums that are emerging around the NCAA. In 2026, though, the stadium has sought to keep up with the times, and has introduced advertisements from sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Google Gemini, and Meijer to the top of its padded blue walls. They will also be featured on the stadium’s jumbotron. Whilst fairly subtle, the majority of fans are left disappointed by the addition. Only 25 percent of fans who voted expressed that they loved it. Of course, that is to be expected from a school which has been rooted in tradition, but in the era of Name, Image and Likness (NIL) deals, if football teams are to attract top talent, they need the money to be able to offer players. Forming partnerships with external brands is one way to bring in those funds. Per Tony Garcia of The Detroit Free Press, Michigan projects their athletics revenue and expenses for the 2026-27 season to be around the $297 million mark. As it stands, the NIL budget for the football team along is estimated at between $35-40 million, which could continue to rise over the next few seasons if a salary cap is not implemented by the NCAA.
