BJP cries foul as Ramchander Rao stopped from visiting Nalgonda - The HinduPublished - September 01, 2026 06:47 pm IST - HYDERABADThe BJP on Tuesday accused the Congress government of “suppressing” democratic rights after State BJP president and former MLC N. Ramchander Rao was stopped by police and taken into custody while attempting to visit Nalgonda district.Mr. Rao was planning to travel to Nalgonda to meet district party president N. Varshith Reddy, whose house was allegedly ransacked by Congress workers. Police personnel reached Mr. Rao’s residence in Tarnaka and prevented him from leaving. He was later taken to Gandhinagar police station, triggering strong protests from party leaders, including national president Nitin Nabin, Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, along with several senior party leaders.The incident comes less than a week after Mr. Rao was similarly prevented from visiting Ramanthapur to meet polytechnic students protesting the proposed merger of their institutions with the Skills University. “Democracy is under threat in Telangana, but Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy cannot silence me. I fought against a dictator like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency,” said Mr. Rao.Asserting that the BJP would intensify its democratic agitation against the government, Mr. Rao demanded that it explain its achievements during its nearly 1,000 days in office. “How many industries have actually set up operations in Telangana? How many times have you gone to Davos? How many investment agreements have been announced, and how many have translated into actual investments and jobs?” he asked.He questioned the celebrations around the government’s tenure when “salaries and pensions were not being paid on time”.Mr. Rao further alleged that HYDRAA had created fear and uncertainty among families, while HILT had raised concerns among industries and employees. The proposed CURE initiative, he claimed, had sparked apprehensions about additional taxes among citizens. He questioned the government’s land auction policy, asking how auctioning land at ₹250 crore an acre would benefit ordinary people struggling with rising household expenses and concerns about their future.Police also detained BJP Legislature Party leader A. Maheshwar Reddy, MLC C. Anji Reddy, former mayor Banda Karthik Reddy and party general secretary T.
