Through the same intermediary I spoke with Maurice Blouin about the upcoming elections in Quebec. Blouin comes from an old Québecois family, his ancestors arrived from France in the middle of the 17th century.On October 5th elections are to be held in Québec. The current government, Coalition Avenir Québec, has not governed well. The former premier François Legault was especially bad during Covid. I followed Covid policy there through the YouTuber VivaFrei. (He eventually fled with his family to Florida.) They even changed their name to Équipe Christine Frechette – Coalition Avenir Quebec after the current premier. Québec faces problems that generally afflict the Western world, globalist politicians that have allowed excessive immigration and caused economic hardship through Covid policies and inflation.The old separatist party, the Parti Québecois, is leading in the polls. Because their opponent’s supporters are largely English speaking and immigrant voters concentrated in Montreal, even with only 30% of the vote they could obtain a majority in the National Assembly (note that the Québec legislature is called “national” not “provincial”). From Wikipedia, that table below shows the 2022 Quebec general election results and how the CAQ has been losing seats to the PQ. The following table with the latest polling data shows the PQ leading. What adds interest is that the PQ promises a referendum on the separation of Québec from Canada during their mandate, but only after Donald Trump leaves office in the US; i.e., after January 2029. The previous referendum on separation in 1995 almost passed with 49.6%.Polling by LegerThe current Canadian prime minister Mark Carney was able to lead the Liberal party to victory in the last national election by playing his trump card, Donald Trump himself. Ten years of disastrous leadership by Justin Trudeau foretold an easy victory by the Conservative Party. But with Trump goading Canada by calling it the 51st state, support swung to Carney who played himself as the patriotic defender of Canada against Trump and the US in general. In fact, to be anti-Trump and anti-US is the defining and unifying element of Canadian culture today.Recently trade talks between Canada and the US collapsed. The failure of the negotiations might be most important for Québec in terms of hydroelectric power that is sent south to the northeast US including New York. It is not a stretch to believe that all Canadian elections today are referendums on Trump.Thus, the October 5 elections could be the first step toward Québexit. On October 19th there will be a referendum in Alberta that could be the first step toward Albertexit. However, I think the breakup of Canada is a longshot. The globalist forces can hardly have a better representative than Mark Carney. They have tools (see The Illusion of Sovereignty – LewRockwell) that can subvert these kinds of populist insurgencies.EpilogueI thought of the not so original term Québexit on my own.
