The suit accused Equifax of violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act by not having adequate policies in place to prevent such errors. The credit bureau agreed to settle the suit while maintaining its denial of the suit's claims.Roughly 37,000 people are estimated to have been impacted, as they may have had a duplicate debt listed on their account when a check was run on their credit between August and September 2022, when the issue was fixed. The settlement's website states all potential class members have been notified, and the claim form says any claim must be submitted by Sept. 1.Why This News MattersMissing a deadline to file a claim for a settlement you are eligible for could mean losing out on a potential payout, as well as the ability to start your own lawsuit for the same issue in the future.Equifax has agreed to give those impacted by the duplicate reporting error six months of its "Equifax Complete" credit monitoring service, worth about $60. Those who file a claim will also receive a cash payment from the $2.2 million settlement fund, which after the deduction of attorneys' fees is expected to be as much as $600 per claimant, though the number could be lower depending on how many eligible people file a claim. There will be a hearing to discuss final approval of the settlement on Oct. 6, with payments set to be made once the settlement is approved and any pending appeals are resolved.Read the original article on InvestopediaTerms and Privacy PolicyEU DSA contactPrivacy & Cookie SettingsMore Info
