Maltese production Press Mute is heading to Italy for the first time, where it will take centre stage at the International Journalism Festival in Ferrara this October.The production will be among the festival’s headline acts on 2nd October, taking to the stage at Ferrara’s historic 1,000-seat Teatro Comunale.Written and directed by journalist and editor Herman Grech and produced by Udjenza, Press Mute explores the increasingly complicated relationship between power, politics and the media.Set largely inside a struggling newsroom, the play tackles everything from political pressure and misinformation to social media outrage, algorithms and the buying of media influence, looking at how these forces can shape what the public ultimately sees and believes.“We’re honoured to be able to restage Press Mute in both Malta and Italy,” Grech said.“For me, the production continues to underline the intimate relationship between theatre and journalism and how the arts can be used as an effective way of communicating an important message.”The cast includes Michela Farrugia, Philip Leone Ganado, Mark Laurence Zammit and Trudy Kerr, while Alan Paris will join the updated production in the role of Perry.Before making its Italian debut, Press Mute will return to Malta for one night only at Teatru Salesjan in Sliema on 18th September, following its sold-out extended run at Spazju Kreattiv earlier this year.Udjenza artistic director Toni Attard said he was particularly proud to see a production “conceived and developed in Malta reach international audiences” as the company celebrates its fifth anniversary.Have you seen Press Mute yet?•
