There's talk going around that Samsung is thinking about discontinuing the Galaxy Z Flip series. The reasoning is that the Flip is expensive to build and there isn't much room left to improve it. And with component costs climbing, Samsung would have to charge more for a phone that's already a tough sell at its current price.My wife worries that Samsung might actually go through with it. Samsung under TM Roh optimizes everything it can, and if that math ends with a device leaving the lineup, that's a real possibility.I get the reasoning, but the clamshell is such an iconic thing that it would be a shame to see it go. Samsung made its name on some crazy clamshells, and I hope it finds a way to keep this one around. Hardware improvements are expensive, I know that. But maybe the answer is a higher price with better specs rather than no Flip at all. The design is distinctive enough that plenty of people, including enthusiasts, would buy it again.My wife tried the Fold 8 recently, and what surprised her was how unnecessary the phone felt if she didn't open it. She doesn't watch much on her phone and doesn't multitask, so she never had a reason to unfold it. She just used the cover screen and got on with her day. For someone like her, a normal bar phone makes more sense, and she would be paying a lot extra for a folding screen she barely touches.Here's the thing though. The Fold didn't always work that way. The original Fold featured a 4.6-inch cover display that was too cramped for daily use, so you had to open it. That was the whole experience.Samsung has spent many years making the cover screen on the Fold better and better. Now it's good enough that someone like my wife never opens the phone at all. The Fold has become so good at being a normal phone that folding and unfolding it has became optional.The Flip doesn't have that problem. You open it because that's how you use it, not because you sometimes feel like using the bigger screen. I'm not saying everyone wants to flip their phone open a hundred times a day, and I know some people find that annoying. I'm just saying it's the one foldable left where the folding part isn't something you can ignore.And that's what bothers me about the rumor. If the Flip goes, Samsung's foldable lineup only has one thing to offer, and that's a bigger screen. Anyone who likes the idea of a folding phone but doesn't actually need that bigger screen would be left with nothing to buy, and that isn't a small group. Buy a Galaxy Z Flip 8
