Speculation is mounting over a possible appointment of Klottey Korle Member of Parliament Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Ghana’s next Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, as President John Dramani Mahama prepares to fill two vacant cabinet positions.The Environment portfolio, alongside the Defence Ministry, has remained without a substantive minister since the death of Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah in a helicopter crash in August 2025.Sources within government indicate that President Mahama is expected to announce appointments this month following commemorative activities marking the first anniversary of the tragedy.The President had earlier indicated in November 2025 that the vacant positions would be filled in 2026.“They say Allah gives and Allah takes. He took two of our comrades, and we haven’t filled those positions yet. We will make those appointments next year,” President Mahama told Muslim leaders at Jubilee House.Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, a medical doctor and MP for Klottey Korle since 2017, has been associated with environmental issues through her work on Parliament’s Environment, Science and Technology Committee.She has also publicly advocated measures to address flooding, including calls for the dredging of the Odaw River and improved management of drainage systems within her constituency.The legislator’s profile received further attention after retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba questioned why she had not yet been appointed to a cabinet position.Speaking at the D.F. Annan Memorial Lecture held in Parliament on July 16, Justice Atuguba praised Dr Agyeman-Rawlings’ leadership qualities and public service record.“Somebody like Zanetor Rawlings, she’s not a politician; she’s a woman of the people. I’ve been following her activities. I don’t know, I’ve never spoken to her, never met her, but I’m convinced that that’s the kind of politician people should aspire to be,” he said.The former Supreme Court judge said he was surprised she had not received a ministerial appointment, although he acknowledged that his comments could attract political attention.“Until now, and that’s why I don’t get involved in politics; I don’t know why she’s not yet a minister. I hope by saying that, I’ve not destroyed her chances,” he stated.Justice Atuguba also suggested that Dr Agyeman-Rawlings’ abilities should not be limited to a deputy ministerial role, arguing that her integrity and commitment deserved consideration for a more senior position.“Such a woman of principle, of dedication, of integrity — why not?” he added.Dr Agyeman-Rawlings recently secured an international leadership role after being elected Second Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament in April 2026.She won the position with 131 votes against her opponent’s 51 votes, becoming the first female representative from the West African Caucus to occupy the role.Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin announced the development, noting that the position carries ministerial status under African Union protocols.The Klottey Korle MP also serves as Chairperson of Parliament’s Select Committee on Security and Intelligence and holds a Master’s degree in Conflict, Peace and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.Since the August 2025 helicopter crash, the Defence Ministry has been managed in an acting capacity by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, while Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has overseen environmental matters alongside his substantive duties.Government sources suggest the expected appointments could form part of President Mahama’s first major ministerial reshuffle, with possible changes involving reassignment of some ministers and the exit of others.While Dr Agyeman-Rawlings’ name has generated attention, no official confirmation has been issued by the Presidency.
