A stronger security presence was deployed in Swieqi overnight following pressure from the local council and residents, Swieqi Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace stated on social media.Galea Pace said police were joined by members of the Armed Forces of Malta in the locality, with their presence intended to act as a deterrent.The deployment comes after a particularly eventful few weeks for Swieqi, with residents repeatedly raising concerns over late-night disturbances, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour linked to the summer influx of visitors.Last month, 12 tourists were fined a combined €2,000 and a Swieqi Airbnb was shut down after footage emerged of bottles allegedly being thrown from balconies onto parked cars.Residents have since reported further incidents, including a vandalised car and public urination, while efforts have also been made to push for CCTV cameras in parts of the locality.The Swieqi Local Council had even invited Malta’s Prime Minister and Opposition Leader to visit and witness residents’ concerns first-hand.Galea Pace said work will continue to make Swieqi a place where residents feel safe and can live peacefully in their homes, describing the latest deployment as another step forward.Do you think the increased security presence will help tackle Swieqi’s ongoing problems?•
