Thermal view of the lava flows no the eastern side of the volcano (image: INGV thermal webcam)The ongoing eruption is intensifying with near-continuous explosive activity and ash emissions from the Voragine summit crater, as well as the opening of two more eruptive fissures further downslope: yesterday evening, a new effusive vent opened at around 23:30 local time in the Valle del Bove at an elevation of approximately 1,900 m near the Monte Simone cinder cone, followed by another effusive vent that opened 12 hours later this morning, at around 11:30 local time, not far away at the northern headwall of the Valle del Bove depression.This indicates a significant migration of eruptive activity downslope: the previous effusive vents had been at elevations of approximately 2,750 and 2,360 meters, respectively.According to the volcano observatory who surveyed the area today, the furthest lava flow fronts had passed the area of Rocca delle Palombe and was at an elevation of approximately 1,370 meters earlier today. Being confined inside the vast Valle del Bove, the flows currently pose no threat to populated areas.In the meantime, intense explosive activity continues from the summit craters, primarily the Voragine crater, producing large amounts of ash rising up to approx. 5,000 m altitude and being carried southwards. Due to the southerly distribution of the ash plume towards the city of Catania, many flights from Catania airports have been canceled or needed to be diverted. Disruptions for travelers coincide with the absolute peak of the tourist season.Volcanic tremor remains elevated, with tremor sources located primarily in the area of ​​the Voragine or between the Voragine and the Northeast Crater, at elevations of 2,500 to 3,000 meters.
