Having taken in well over $1 billion at the global box office, Toy Story 5 is obviously one of the most popular movies of 2026, even if Christopher Nolan and Spider-Man were just as quick to join the billion-dollar club. And even though it only hit theaters in mid-June, Disney and Pixar are already set to give fans a chance to own the emotional and often hilarious sequel soon, and we now have our first look at a deleted scene involving Joan Cusack’s Jessie actually reuniting with her former owner Emily. It still plays out pretty much as it would have in the finished film, though, and I’m so glad that so many other fans basically shared the same takeaway that I had after watching. But for my money, Jessie digging up the time capsule and learning that she's the namesake for her former owner's first daughter is such a good way for the character to reach full catharsis on her own, without other characters needed to get her there. (I mean, Bullseye and the real horse helped, but still.) Co-writer Kenya Harris told CinemaBlend previously that reveal was a late-stage addition, and the deleted scene certainly explains why that emotional climax came into the story as late as it did. Saying the cut interaction between Jessie and Emily was instinctually a great way to go, Harris told EW that it became something of a litmus test for the emotional impact. In her words:This turned out to be not quite the way to express that for the movie, but it’s sort of like Goodbye Charlie, we knew that we had a goal as far as how sentimental, how soft we wanted to be for this moment.”In a different story, perhaps Jessie touching base with Emily after all these years would have been the better move, but in a world where this version of Toy Story 5 exists, I think fans ended up with the best possible option. And plenty of other fans agree with that point, as indicated by some of the comments below:Would have been great but ultimately makes no sense because Jessie would end up leaving to go back. I'm glad she just sees the photo, learns about the daughter, and moves on in the final version. - @tillie_thundersTo be fair, not every opinion shared was in agreement with my thoughts, and there were plenty of people who felt like it would have sent audiences into tearful tizzies had it been in the final cut. And they're probably right. But I don't so much agree with any comments that called the movie "boring" or "mid" and then said this one deleted scene's inclusion would have fixed such complaints. Those people can go hang out with Chelsea, Heidi and Kara. Toy Story 5 will be available for purchase on digital platforms such as Apple, Prime Video and more starting on August 18. Those holding out to buy it on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD will have to wait until the physical copies hit stores on September 22. In the meantime, the first four movies can be streamed via Disney+ subscription.
