WSL giants Chelsea are one of 18 clubs seeking to advance out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League third and final qualifying round. Alyssa Thompson, Naomi Girma and Chelsea will take on Spanish club Real Sociedad in a two-legged qualifying round series, UEFA announced Tuesday during their draw. Sonya Bompastor’s squad will take on Sociedad on August 26 and September 2, with the winner sealing their spot into the UCL League Phase. A third-place finish in the WSL last season guaranteed Chelsea a spot in the qualifying round, with league champions Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal earning automatic berths into the tournament’s league phase. Thompson and Girma remain part of the London club’s preparations this summer ahead of the start of the new season. The 21-year-old Thompson scored nine goals and added four assists in her debut campaign with the Blues while the 26-year-old Girma made 18 appearances and scored twice in her second season abroad. Real Sociedad finished third in the Spanish top-flight last season behind league champions Barcelona and second-place Real Madrid. Chelsea’s two-legged series will conclude prior to the start of its WSL schedule, which gets underway on September 5 against Aston Villa.
