Lyon are one round away from returning to the UEFA Champions League. Tanner Tessmann and Lyon advanced to the final qualifying round after defeating Sparta Prague 3-0 in second leg action on Tuesday. Despite losing the first leg in Slovakia 2-1, Paulo Fonseca’s squad overturned the aggregate deficit to seal their spot in the final round. Tessmann, 24, made his second-straight start this summer, logging 90 minutes from his defensive midfield position. Ernest Nuamah propelled Lyon in front 1-0 after 20 minutes before Sparta Prague saw defender Adam Sevinsky sent off before halftime, reducing the visitors to 10-men. Ainsley Maitland-Niles extended Lyon’s lead to 2-0 on the night and boosted them in front 3-2 on aggregate after finishing off Corentin Tolisso’s pass. Tyler Morton put the series out of reach with a 73rd minute finish, giving Lyon a cushion that they would hold onto the rest of the way. Tessmann won two duels, made four defensive recoveries, and drew one foul. Lyon will now prepare for a stingy two-legged series against Turkish opponents Fenerbahce, with the winners sealing their place in the UCL League Phase. In addition, Lyon will travel to Toulouse for their Ligue 1 opener on August 22 in between the two legs. Tessmann will be one of five American players seeking to reach the UCL League Phase, joining Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, George Bello, and Sam Adeniran in the hunt. Carter-Vickers and Trusty will face off with Bello and Adeniran next week as well with Celtic taking on LASK in the battle of Scottish and Austrian champions.
