In an Impulse, an extension can occur in Wave 1, Wave 3, or Wave 5. It is important to distinguish an extension from internal waves. Internal waves are simply the lower-degree subdivisions that exist within an Elliott Wave, whereas an extension is a wave that becomes disproportionately large and contains additional internal subdivision. For example, when Wave 3 is extended, the main Wave 3 remains at the same degree, but internally develops a five-wave structure (1)-(2)-(3)-(4)-(5). Each of these internal waves can, in turn, contain its own lower-degree subdivisions. A Diagonal is a separate motive-wave pattern and should not be confused with an extension. However, a wave within a Diagonal can also become extended. Key principle: An extension is not simply a “long wave”; it is a longer and more complex wave with additional internal subdivision compared with other waves of the same degree.
