Arsenal’s Brazilian contingent looks set to grow again, with Bruno Guimarães reportedly completing his medical in North London today.To welcome the midfielder to the Premier League Champions, I thought it would be fun to look back at the best Brazilians to have worn the famous red and white.Here is my greatest Arsenal Brazilian XI.To clarify, this isn’t based on what they achieved elsewhere, so apologies to Willian!Arsenal’s Greatest Brazilian DefenceGK – NetoBy the time we loaned him from Bournemouth, he had already played in the Carabao Cup. That meant he was cup-tied for the rest of that competition, making the arrangement feel rather pointless.He started just one game as a Gunner, by which point we had already qualified for the Champions League knockout stages.He’s now back playing in his homeland.LB – SylvinhoThe first Brazilian ever to sign for Arsenal, Sylvinho was ahead of his time in terms of a full-back being an attacking outlet.The five goals he scored in red and white all seemed to be breathtaking.A serious calf injury, though, produced a butterfly effect. By the time the defender regained fitness, he had been replaced by a certain Ashley Cole.Ironically, they would both be on Barcelona’s bench years later when they broke Arsenal hearts in Paris.He also remains the only former Gunner to manage at the European Championships.CB – GabrielMy player of the whole Premier League last season.If you ask what the biggest factors were behind us becoming champions, it was our ability to defend better than anyone else and how dangerous we became from set pieces.The 28-year-old reminded many that there is an art to defending, as he and Saliba formed one of the best partnerships in world football.Thanks to them, you can’t bully Arsenal anymore.CB – David LuizStill playing at the age of 39, now in Cyprus, David Luiz’s legacy has always been the same: when he was good, he was very good. When he was bad, he could be a liability.That trait continued in North London, where he set the record for conceding the most penalties in a single Premier League season (five).Yet if you had to name his two best displays as a Gunner?The answer would be the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City and then the final against Chelsea. At Wembley, on both occasions, he was flawless.An enigma?RB – Gabriel PaulistaHe has to be a makeshift right-back in my team, but he did play there at times during his career.You could never accuse the centre-back of being bullied, which you couldn’t say about everyone in our dressing room at the time.A squad player at the Emirates, but he still contributed to two FA Cup triumphs, so he will always have his place in our history.He has also lifted domestic cups in Spain, Turkey and Brazil, where he still plays.Arsenal’s Greatest Brazilian Midfield and AttackCM – Gilberto SilvaMr Wenger finally found a replacement for Petit by bringing in a World Cup winner.He’s one of the Invincibles who perhaps didn’t receive as much credit as some of his teammates because, back then, he played in a position that wasn’t considered glamorous. In that role, not being noticed often meant you were doing your job perfectly.In 2026, players in that position are valued at well over £100 million.His leadership was also crucial in helping a young squad transition from Highbury to the Emirates.CM – EduSome Gooners will feel the 48-year-old damaged his legacy because of how he left his role as Arsenal’s Director of Football to work at Nottingham Forest.On the pitch, though, only two Brazilian Gunners can call themselves Invincibles.He was the perfect squad player, which proved vital in two title-winning campaigns.Whenever anything happened to the likes of Vieira, you could trust Edu.CM – DenílsonIn many ways, he became the face of Arsenal’s early Emirates years, when Mr Wenger was financially restricted and relied on building a young squad.As a teenager, the midfielder featured in exciting youthful Carabao Cup teams, and it wasn’t long before he was partnering Cesc Fàbregas in midfield.Some will harshly argue he became one of several players on high wages whom Arsenal struggled to move on, which is why he spent two years out on loan before eventually leaving.Others will sympathise, believing he became homesick in London and that the loneliness affected his mental health.That’s why the Gunners did everything they could to help him return to South America.LW – Gabriel MartinelliI was so excited when Martinelli burst onto the scene as a teenager.He was one of the few bright lights during Unai Emery’s final months and Mikel Arteta’s early days in charge.Now 25, there’s debate among the fanbase over whether he’s an example of a player whose flair has gradually been coached out of him.His manager likes to micromanage, so while his work rate off the ball can never be questioned, will we see him return to the days when he constantly took on his full-back?It feels like a huge season for him.CF – Júlio BaptistaHe arrived on loan from Real Madrid as part of the deal that saw José Antonio Reyes head in the opposite direction.He never quite did enough to convince Arsenal to make the move permanent.Yet on the way to a Carabao Cup final he scored twice at White Hart Lane and four at Anfield.That won’t be forgotten.RW – Gabriel JesusHaving worked together at Manchester City, Mikel Arteta believed Jesus could bring his winning mentality to a young Arsenal dressing room and help the club get over the line.In many ways, he did, although perhaps not in the way anyone expected.The 29-year-old has endured some serious long-term injuries in North London, including two knee surgeries.Based on the mental strength it took to return to the highest level, he deserved his fifth Premier League medal.Dan SmithWhat do you think of Dan’s Brazilian XI?
