It’s only three months to GTA 6, and I know, I know, we’ve been talking about it non-stop for just about the last year or so. However, it’s shaping up to be the biggest game of all time, and by a fairly wide margin, though GTA 5 is still making rounds and proving to everyone just how monumental it is even today. According to Game Developer, who looked into Take-Two Interactive’s latest fiscal report, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 230 million copies since first launching on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. The game was subsequently ported to the then-current generation of consoles, i.e., the PS4 and Xbox One, and then to PC, and then, finally, to the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. GTA 5 really is a behemoth. Image via Rockstar Games Take-Two also revealed just how much GTA as a franchise has sold over its many decades on the market, and that figure amounts to nearly 475 million copies total. It’s scary that one game, GTA 5, accounts for more than half of that sum. The franchise first came out in 1997 as a top-down 2D sandbox experience and then slowly evolved more and more into a narratively focused, sandbox-adjacent series that delivered us some of the most recognizable faces and moments in all of gaming history. GTA Online, not the first but by far the biggest multiplayer take on the franchise, also likely played a major role in GTA 5‘s continued growth and dominance. Grand Theft Auto 5 is the third best-selling game of all time and likely the most profitable piece of entertainment ever released. It trails only behind Minecraft and Tetris, though which one of those is higher depends on who you’re asking. Still, Rockstar’s prime title sits firmly at the number three spot, while the fourth is also occupied by another Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption 2. That game has shipped 87 million copies since 2018, with the franchise as a whole selling over 116 million total. With these numbers in mind, I can’t begin to fathom the ultimate sales figures of GTA 6 in 13 years’ time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to beat both Minecraft and Tetris.
