TVK cadre’s march towards Fort St. George stopped by police in Vellore - The HinduPublished - August 10, 2026 01:18 am IST - VELLOREBarricades were erected to prevent the illegal march from proceeding towards Chennai. | Photo Credit: Special ArrangementAn unauthorised march by a large number of cadres and supporters of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Anna Salai in front of fort complex in Vellore town on Sunday was stopped by the district police after traffic movement on the route came to a grinding halt.Police said the supporters of TVK led by Vellore district secretary Velmurugan decided to take a march from Vellore fort to Fort St. George in Chennai to highlight the 1806 Vellore Sepoy Revolt.Police said the march was also believed to emphasize that TVK founder president C. Joseph Vijay will be the permanent Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Such an illegal march, police said, could result in traffic congestion and public nuisance. It was around 10 a.m when Velmurugan with his supporters gathered in front of the fort complex with Velmurugan holding a ‘Sengol Sceptre, police rushed to the spot.Barricades were erected to prevent the illegal march from proceeding towards Chennai. Traffic was hit on the route with ambulances and government buses had to wait for long before police dispersed the crowd peacefully.Motorists said that such illegal rallies and marches should be prevented. Strict action should be taken against organisers of such unauthorized events that could result in public nuisance and inconvenience.
