President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged NRM members of Parliament to strengthen oversight of government programmes and take a leading role in fighting corruption and improving public service delivery. Museveni made the call during the 3rd NRM Parliamentary Caucus of the 12th Parliament at Speke Resort Munyonyo, where he urged legislators to remain focused on the needs of ordinary Ugandans and the party’s goal of socioeconomic transformation. The President warned MPs against corruption and urged them to expose practices that undermine government programmes and service delivery in their constituencies. He cited allegations of District Service Commission officials selling jobs and reports of officials implementing the Parish Development Model (PDM) demanding money or kickbacks from beneficiaries.NRM MPs at MunyonyoMuseveni said the PDM was established to help households move out of poverty and should not be turned into an avenue for officials to enrich themselves. He also directed MPs to strengthen monitoring of government health facilities, particularly the attendance of medical personnel and the utilisation of medicines.Museveni warned that government was considering dismissing habitual absentee doctors from public health facilities and replacing them with medical personnel willing to consistently serve patients. He said persistent absenteeism among some doctors had undermined service delivery in government hospitals, forcing government to accelerate the deployment of intern doctors and improve their remuneration to address staffing gaps. The President also urged legislators to closely monitor medicines supplied to government hospitals and health centres to ensure they reach the intended beneficiaries. He said government was strengthening measures to curb the theft and misuse of medicines, adding that accountability in the health sector was essential to improving healthcare services and restoring public confidence in government facilities.Museveni reminded NRM legislators that the party’s political strength and longevity depend on its ability to address citizens’ needs, improve livelihoods and promote sustainable socioeconomic development. He urged MPs to remain disciplined, people-centred and guided by the NRM’s ideological principles as they undertake their legislative and oversight responsibilities. The post Museveni tasks NRM MPs on fighting corruption, improving service delivery appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
