‘I have never seen a 90 percent premium share before:’ Only one in ten players preordered GTA 6’s standard edition, proving fans are willing to stomach the $100 price

Wait 5 sec.

Yeah, you absolutely did just read that headline. And I’m not surprised, since I anticipated GTA 6 would cost $100 for the standard edition anyway. And since so many people are buying the premium one, it might as well be considered the baseline at this point. As GamesIndustry.biz writes, citing Sensor Tower’s Karl Kontus, 90 percent of GTA 6‘s preorders on Xbox were for the $100 premium edition, while 88.5 percent of PlayStation users opted for it instead of the $80 standard one. Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick did not want to disclose the actual numbers last week but did say preorders were heavily skewed toward premium, and now that’s been backed up by some actual data. Image via Rockstar Games As Kontus said, these are ludicrous numbers, even if we do consider how big GTA is. He explains that preorders typically have a penchant for leaning toward more expensive editions due to hardcore fans making up the bulk of the preordering audience. However, they typically don’t go beyond 10 to 20 percent, or 50 in the best cases, making this figure genuinely stunning. “I have never seen a 90% premium share before,” Kontus told GamesIndustry.biz. However, he does expect the share to mellow out and equalize by Nov. 19, since, as he explains, most preorders usually happen in the week leading up to release. By then, the premium and standard editions will be split down the middle, each representing 50 percent of total purchases. GTA is an unpredictable beast and very atypical and different from most series and franchises, now more than ever. In that case, anything goes, and we’ll know exactly how inclined people are toward spending the extra cash, even with the promise of additional content, in a little more than four months.
