In response to Rideshare Simulator‘s lead writer, Stella Sacco, accusing Saber Interactive of replacing her with ChatGPT, the company’s chief executive, Matt Karch, wrote a hideous response to her, and I have no choice but to paste it in here, in full, for the world to see. As spotted on GamesIndustry.biz, the CEO’s screed is up there with some of the worst things I’ve ever spoken about, and it’s not because it’s so closely related to AI (though that does play a big part in it) but due to its being so unprofessional and borderline disgusting and done in the service of cloud overlords and against a fellow human being. Stella who? I had to ask Claude because I have never spoken to her or seen her. We have already said we are using AI for certain parts of the game and will update the Steam page once we have finalized the feature set. Let me clarify that the entire story script, were it to win an award, would go to someone who can walk up on stage and receive it. It was always our intention to reveal this until Stella violated her confidentiality clause and revealed this before we were ready. We look at our use of AI in this particular game, which will be a lower-priced title, as a plus for consumers. As far as Stella is concerned, she was replaced by someone more talented and terminated for a variety of reasons a few months later. From what I can gather, she enjoys controversy even more than I do. I would frankly in retrospect have been happy to replace her with AI. At least we would be dealing with someone programmed to be honest. This is something only an AI-addicted brain could come up with and does nothing good for either Saber, Karch, or Sacco, or anyone else regretting having been born with eyes and ears this morning. It’s by far one of the worst things I’ve ever encountered in all my years playing video games and following its culture, and why? Because a company is so obsessed with these supposed “pluses” that gamers will gain, when in fact it’s the corporate brass raking in unimaginable cash by firing people and replacing them with crooked machinery that can output text no better than what cavemen used to paint on the walls. And even that was at least honest and human and emotional and part of a larger cultural phenomenon, not some cloud software vomiting out regurgitated trash picked up from the side of the road. Perhaps Karch, in all his wisdom, and like-minded chief executives, who so love their AI companions, should be the ones being replaced. It’d be way more fitting.
