It’s almost maddening to think that it’s been 3 ½ years since reports first linked Matthew McConaughey to mega-producer Taylor Sheridan, which came out amidst all of the latter’s behind-the-scenes chaos on Yellowstone with Kevin Costner.Since that point, the flagship show ended, the prequel 1923 wrapped, two sequel series premiered (Marshals and Dutton Ranch) along with the initially-a-spinoff drama The Madison, and Sheridan himself signed a lucrative new deal with NBCUniversal. So it’d seem like any potential McConaughey projects have been put to pasture, right?Not so fast! Even though nothing concrete has yet has been settled on for the Interstellar star to partner up with Sheridan on, McConaughey surprisingly revealed that such hypothetical plans are technically still in place. It’s just a matter of landing on whatever makes the most sense. While speaking with The Playlist ahead of his newest starring role in The Rivals of Amziah King, the actor was asked if the Yellowstone follow-up plans were dead, and responded with:No, I mean, it’s not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while. Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what [it could be] and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet.So in the grand scheme of things, this isn't necessarily an update to celebrate with a weekend bender, but it's way more positive than just blindly assuming that those talks fell through years ago. It's not like either McConaughey or Sheridan have been lacking for work, so I get that it'll probably still take a while flr things to come together if and when they DO land on an idea they both agree is worth exploring. In the meantime, though, I've got some of my own ideas for how these two should cross career paths. 1. Matthew McConaughey Should Lead The Cast Of 1944Considering both 1883 and 1923 were such hits for Paramount+, it's shocking that seemingly no progress has been made for getting the third Yellowstone prequel into production. It's not entirely clear if Sheridan ending his overall deal with Paramount killed that project, or if there's still a proper chance for it to be made. If the latter is the case, then it's a no-brainer that Matthew McConaughey should head up the cast as whichever Dutton patriarch would make sense, timing-wise. He'd be a fantastic casting choice to follow Tim McGraw and Harrison Ford in the earlier prequels, and I would even welcome some kind of quasi-stunt casting for his female counterpart, such as having How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days' Kate Hudson co-starring. Or Woody Harrelson in a wig. 2. Dutton Ranch Should Introduce Matthew McConaughey As The Brother Of Rob-Will's Father LukeThis is a stretch, sure, but I think it's feasible that Luke, the man who raped Beulah Jackson and is the biological father of Rob-Will, could have had a brother who always wanted to get revenge for his brother's death, but let it fall to the wayside for all those years. That is, until he catches wind of Rob-Will's murder, and that draws him out of the woodwork and puts the Jackson family in his crosshairs. Outside of that approach, I think McConaughey could also join the story as someone from Everett's past. Possibly a nephew or other estranged family member, or even someone that he spent time with as a vet (either animal doctor or military). Considering Dazed and Confused co-stars McConaughey and Cole Hauser are already reteaming for a Netflix show with True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto, it's not a huge leap for him to join Dutton Ranch. 3. Matthew McConaughey Joins An Action-Revamped Spinoff Set At The 6666The longest-rumored Yellowstone spinoff was meant to be set at the Four Sixes Ranch that Taylor Sheridan bought out years prior, which is what sparked Jimmy's move to Texas. And the mothership series basically set the new project up, with reports that Ryan Bingham's Walker would be moving back down to Texas to co-star. Nothing ever came from those plans, but I think adding Matthew McConaughey would be the best way to renew interest. And in that scenario, I see McConaughey stepping in as a quasi-mentor for Jefferson White's Jimmy to help the full-on cowboy further evolve into more of a badass enforcer like Rip. Honestly, I could keep slinging these ideas at the wall until the wall falls down. A cameo appearance on Landman that just puts him and Billy Bob Thornton in the same setting for a full episode of drawling conversation. A completely original Yellowstone spinoff that has McConaughey as a (true) detective investigating a murder somewhere on the now-protected lands. I want it all!For now, though, fans will have to watch Matthew McConaughey in the non-Dutton-y project The Rivals of Amziah King, which hits theaters on August 21, 2026.
