Nearly two years after the President’s Kitchen Garden closed its gates to the public, restoration works are continuing behind the scenes, although there is still no indication of when the popular attraction will reopen.In response to questions sent by Lovin Malta, the Office of the President confirmed that extensive works are underway at the historic site, which covers around 10,000 square metres and forms part of the wider San Anton Palace grounds.The update comes after the Office of the President previously told Lovin Malta in October 2025 that the garden required major investment to address health and safety concerns before it could welcome visitors once again.Now, nearly a year later, officials say a detailed survey of the entire site has been completed, while the removal of dangerous structures is nearing completion.Restoration works on sections of the perimeter walls that required urgent intervention have also been contracted.However, the Office stressed that the project remains particularly complex due to the site’s heritage status.The Kitchen Garden is classified as a Grade 2 site, while neighbouring San Anton Palace is a Grade 1 scheduled building, meaning any intervention requires ongoing collaboration with various government entities to ensure the site’s historical and architectural significance is protected.Officials reiterated that the long-term aim remains to reopen the Kitchen Garden for public enjoyment, noting that the area was originally part of the private gardens of San Anton Palace before later being opened to the public.For now, though, visitors hoping for a reopening date will have to keep waiting, with authorities stopping short of providing a timeline for when the project will be completed.The Kitchen Garden has been closed since August 2024.Would you like to see the President’s Kitchen Garden reopened as soon as possible?•
