J-Jose Ortiz.'TDN Rising Star' Summer Starlet lived up to her name Saturday with a dazzling 6 1/2-length triumph at 15-1 odds in her first start, her performance quality emphasized by the matching 6 1/2-length gap from runner up Aerial Affair back to the rest of the field. Brian Coelho and John Bellinger of B C Stables–introduced to the game by the late D. Wayne Lukas–bought her for $335,000 last September at Keeneland and put together a partnership also covering several other 2-year-olds including filly Glory Run (daughter of the late Girvin), who presently is 2-for-2.Summer Starlet | Sarah Andrew4. J-Tyler Gaffalione.Vinny Viola's Expressman (Liam's Map) never won a stakes but dazzled when unveiled at Saratoga four years ago; his 107 Beyer was the highest for a first-timer in 11 years. And 17 days after that auspicious debut, Team Valor's Barry Irwin keyed in a winning digital bid of $225,000 for Expressman's dam, Spangled Banner. The next spring, Irwin bred her to War of Will and got the promising U.S.S. Valor, who was slow into stride in his debut Saturday but delivered a race-best :24.75 final quarter to lose by less than a length in the strongest MSW so far at Saratoga (see the two colts below). Furthermore, McGaughey hasn't recently cranked up his summertime youngsters: before this, his best Beyer for a juvenile first-timer the last five years at Saratoga has been 73.3. His dam was among Canada's best distaffers in 2017-18 with four Gr. III victories over Woodbine's Tapeta and a best Beyer of 90. His namesake, Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope, pointed out in a tweet beforehand that Coach Pope would be running against Coach's Pals, owned by St. John's (and former Kentucky) coach Rick Pitino. Alas, Coach's Pals was scratched. Maybe next time.2. J-Flavien Prat.Having touted himself with a swift half-mile gate drill two Saturdays prior, the Louisiana-bred $220,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling buy quickly put himself on the outside hip of leader Bellissimo d'Oro and pounced turning for home to record the highest 2-year-old Beyer thus far at the Saratoga meet. The owners apparently did their naming homework: longtime NHL defenseman Erik Johnson privately acquired the dam in 2018 before selling her in 2020 to Coteau Grove Farms of Sunset, La., also the breeder of current Louisiana-bred sensation Touchuponastar. Gaudreau is named for seven-time NHL all-star Johnny Gaudreau, who with his brother Matthew was killed in a cycling accident two years ago by a suspected drunk driver.1. J-Ricardo Santana Jr.Ochoa had won with two of his last 59 starters and had a lifetime 0-for-1 record at Saratoga before Sunday–then struck twice on the card with longshot maiden claimers who won emphatically. Classic Rock was the fastest of the two, leading from the start through blazing :21.44 and :44.49 splits before drawing away at 8-1 odds to win by 8 3/4 lengths. It was his third start, his first for a tag ($35,000) and his first for little-known owner/trainer Ochoa after an apparent private purchase. The post Five Fastest Maidens For The Week Of Aug. 3-9 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
