I think he has to make things happen for Liverpool.“He’s a quick footballer and last year I thought he was guilty of too many flicks where he was giving the ball away.“The very best teams keep the ball and the flicks made them lose possession. When they lost possession, they were in trouble. That was the reason Liverpool conceded goals.”Manchester United: Mason MountLiverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United enjoyed a return to form last term under the guidance of former midfielder Michael Carrick.Mason Mount has shown promising signs so far in pre-season as he looks to get his United career on trackGettyUnited secured third spot and a much-needed return to the riches of Champions League football.Like Liverpool, the Red Devils were forced to contend with injuries of their own, one of which being Mason Mount.The midfielder has been blighted by injury since joining the club from Chelsea in 2023.His time in the treatment room has seen him miss out on Euro 2024 and this summer’s World Cup with England.Mount has spent a total of 394 days on the sidelines since arriving at Old Trafford and Aherne believes he should look no further than his Manchester United teammate for inspiration.“He needs to have a strong season,” Aherne said of Mount.Luke Shaw played nearly every minute under Carrick after overcoming his injury owesGetty“Luke Shaw played every game last season and really got his season back on track, sorted out the injury issues and he was brilliant.“But Mason Mount, you always hear that he’s the perfect pupil. He’s a very smart and intelligent player and when he’s on his game. He’s brilliant.“You just hope that this season he will come good.”Cascarino is also hopeful the 27-year-old could find his level again and highlighted one of his key attributes.“They paid £55m for him. He was injured at Chelsea before he got to Old Trafford and he was a terrific player for Chelsea,” Cascarino said.“He can play in that floating position like Wirtz and he can get a goal.“Manchester United need a really fit Mason Mount, if not to start, then to challenge for other player’s spots in the team.“He’s a good finisher, get him in goalscoring positions and he will finish.
