Italian side Genoa are interested in signing striker Evan Ferguson on loan, talkSPORT understands.Ferguson, who hasn’t played for Brighton since December 2024, spent last season on loan with Serie A powerhouse Roma.Ferguson started just 10 league matches for Roma last seasonGettyHowever, he was restricted to just 16 league starts owing to an ankle injury he sustained in March. The switch to the Olimpico came after a disappointing stint at West Ham for the second half of the 2024/25 season.Even so, Genoa are keen to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to Italy for a brief spell. This comes despite Ferguson’s extended spell on the sidelines owing to the aforementioned ankle issue. The 21-year-old is absent until October at the earliest, meaning a permanent departure is unlikely.‘We’ll see the best of him’Former Newcastle and Aston Villa goalkeeper, and compatriot, Shay Given believes that Ferguson would benefit from a loan move to Celtic.Ferguson has previously been linked with a move to the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership champions, though has never played for Celtic.“If you have a manager like Martin O’Neill at Celtic who can trust Ferguson, put him in, and put his arm around his shoulder, I think we will see the best of him,” Given said.“Martin is brilliant at that with his man management. The Celtic fans would be very excited to see Evan arrive in Glasgow too.Ferguson would benefit from a move to long-term admirers Celtic, claims Shay GivenGetty“I just think he needs to go somewhere where the manager is a bit old school about these things.“Someone who will tell Evan you are my number nine, you are going to play every week, you are my main man. I’m putting a lot of eggs in your basket, I believe in you, so don’t let me down.“I don’t think it’s about sports science or tactics. He needs to go to a club where he can settle, feel that confidence again, and put the injuries behind him and go on a good run.”On Ferguson’s fitness issues, Given added: “The last couple of seasons must have been so frustrating for him.“After every injury he has had to go back and nearly start with another miniature preseason again, five or six times a season. It is not ideal.“Would a move to Celtic be a make or break moment for Evan Ferguson? No, because Evan doesn’t strike me as the sort of character where you can break him like that.“The only thing that can break him at the minute is his injury record.”Ferguson has previously been touted to take the Premier League by storm. However, the Irish forward has failed to kick on following his hat-trick against Newcastle in 2023 that announced the striker to the world.
