Nearly 11 years after a classic attraction disappeared from EPCOT, Disney is officially bringing a piece of its past back into the spotlight.The timing is especially interesting. A major anniversary is approaching, Disney is celebrating the attraction at this year’s D23 event, and another recent release has put one of the biggest names associated with it back in front of audiences.None of that confirms Disney plans to bring the attraction back to EPCOT. Still, it’s enough to raise an intriguing question: Could Disney have an anniversary surprise waiting?Disney World Has Said Goodbye to Several ClassicsDisney World has removed several longtime experiences in recent years. Some have already received replacements, while others are making way for projects that remain under construction.Splash Mountain (2023) – The Magic Kingdom attraction closed in January 2023 and was transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which opened in June 2024.Muppet*Vision 3D (2025) – The Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction closed in June 2025 as Disney prepared the area for its new Monsters, Inc.-themed land, Monstropolis.Tom Sawyer Island (2025) – The Magic Kingdom area permanently closed in July 2025 alongside the Rivers of America. Disney is transforming the area as part of Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-themed expansion.Liberty Square Riverboat (2025) – The Liberty Belle ended its run with the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Its former surroundings are also being transformed for Piston Peak.Those closures show how quickly familiar pieces of Disney World can become part of history.But Disney occasionally reaches back into that history, too. And one EPCOT favorite is suddenly getting attention again.Credit: D23A Classic EPCOT Attraction Is Making Waves AgainCaptain EO starred Michael Jackson as the title character in a 3D musical science-fiction adventure directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas.The film debuted at EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination pavilion on September 12, 1986.Captain EO combined music, elaborate effects, colorful characters, and an ambitious production, making it much more than a traditional theme park movie. Jackson performed songs, including “We Are Here to Change the World,” during the adventure.The original EPCOT run ended in 1994, but that wasn’t the end of the story.Following Jackson’s death in 2009, Disney brought Captain EO back to its theme parks. The new item features authentic sounds, giving longtime fans a surprisingly specific piece of merchandise tied to the former EPCOT attraction.The plush will initially be available during the D23 event before becoming available to a wider audience through the Disney Store online.On its own, new merchandise doesn’t mean an attraction is coming back.The timing, however, makes this particular release considerably more interesting.Could We Get a 40th Anniversary Return?September 12 marks exactly 40 years since Captain EO debuted at EPCOT.Meanwhile, Michael Jackson has received renewed attention following the theatrical release of Michael (2026), the biographical film starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson. The movie premiered in theaters in April and recently debuted on Starz.Put everything together, and an EPCOT return doesn’t seem completely impossible.Disney has already shown a willingness to make temporary changes to attractions tied to major celebrations. Soarin’ Across America, for example, debuted at EPCOT in May 2026 as part of Disney’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.Could Captain EO receive a similar limited engagement for its 40th?Disney hasn’t announced anything suggesting that’s happening. The Fuzzball plush could simply celebrate Captain EO’s anniversary, with no theme park component attached.Still, the combination of the anniversary, new merchandise, and renewed attention surrounding Jackson makes the possibility interesting enough to watch.And Captain EO probably won’t be the only reason Disney Parks fans are paying close attention to D23.Credit: DisneyWhat Else Could Be Announced at D23?Disney hasn’t revealed exactly what theme park news it will announce at this year’s D23 event, so expectations should remain in check.However, the company has an enormous slate of projects underway around the world, giving Disney plenty it could discuss.At Walt Disney World, construction continues on Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney is also developing Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, while Tropical Americas is transforming a large section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.Internationally, Disney Adventure World officially debuted at Disneyland Paris in March alongside World of Frozen. Construction is already underway on the park’s future Lion King area, which will feature a major water attraction.Tokyo Disneyland is preparing for its next-generation Space Mountain project, while other Disney resorts continue developing previously announced expansions and attractions.Fans could potentially hear new details about those projects during D23. Disney could also announce attraction refurbishments, closures, replacements, or entirely unexpected projects.For now, though, Disney hasn’t promised any particular announcement.Credit: DisneyA Classic is Back in the ConversationA Fuzzball plush might seem like a small addition compared with Disney’s massive theme park expansion plans.For Captain EO fans, however, it carries more weight.Disney is revisiting an EPCOT experience just weeks before the 40th anniversary and nearly 11 years after its last run. That’s naturally going to create hope that something bigger could follow.Maybe Disney has a temporary return of Captain EO planned. Maybe the company simply saw the anniversary as the perfect opportunity to create merchandise for nostalgic fans.Until Disney says more, the latter remains the safer assumption.But after nearly 11 years away from EPCOT, Captain EO is suddenly part of the Disney Parks conversation again.
