A programme that has already transformed the lives of children with visual impairments is now getting even bigger.ISPORT, a collaboration between The Malta Trust Foundation and the Malta Paralympic Committee, is officially expanding into ISPORT+, opening up sporting opportunities for youngsters with both physical and visual impairments. Now, the renewed partnership will widen its reach, ensuring even more young people can take part in sports that may otherwise feel out of reach.“The renewal of our partnership with the Malta Paralympic Committee for the next phase of ISPORT+ is a truly happy moment,” said Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, founder and chair of The Malta Trust Foundation.“Over the past four years, we have created valuable sports opportunities for children and young people with visual impairments, and the confidence, happiness and sense of achievement they have gained are our greatest reward.”She added that the foundation is committed to empowering children with both physical and visual challenges through sport, while hoping some participants may one day represent Malta as para-athletes.More Than Just SportMinister for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector Julia Farrugia said ISPORT+ is built on the belief that everyone deserves equal access to sport.“Sport has the power to build confidence and give young people a strong sense of belonging. Everyone should have the opportunity not only to participate, but also to develop their talents and reach their full potential,” she said.Since its launch, ISPORT has grown into a network connecting young athletes, coaches, sports clubs and families. The programme has also benefited from international collaborations, particularly with Italy’s Federazione Italiana Nuoto Paralimpico (FINP), giving Maltese athletes access to specialist coaching, training sessions and development workshops.Building Malta’s Future Para-AthletesMalta Paralympic Committee General Secretary Julian Bajada said a major focus of ISPORT+ will be training more coaches to meet the specific needs of athletes with disabilities.“ISPORT+ is a fantastic opportunity for children and young people with physical or visual impairments to become involved in sport and physical activity, and to participate meaningfully and fully in society,” he said.According to Bajada, the initiative goes far beyond competition, helping participants build independence, lifelong social skills and a strong sense of community.The expanded programme will also invest in parents, siblings and the wider sporting community, creating a support system that extends well beyond the playing field.With ISPORT+ entering its next chapter, even more young people across Malta will have the opportunity to discover their abilities, break down barriers and realise their full potential through sport.•
