Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has hit back at Opposition leader Alex Borg following comments made about the ongoing proceedings linked to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.Borg had said testimony emerging from the ongoing trial was raising “very serious questions” about what was happening at Castille during Muscat’s time as prime minister, as well as alleged links between people in power and suspicious individuals.Muscat responded by pointing towards his decision to seek assistance from US authorities following Caruana Galizia’s murder.“While the Leader of the Opposition first said he would not comment on the ongoing trial, he has now decided to drag me into it,” Muscat said.He argued that the “crucial step” in the case was the decision, taken within minutes, to request the intervention of American authorities, describing it as “one decision without fear or favour”.Muscat said this ultimately contributed to a situation where the executors of the murder have been convicted and a trial concerning an alleged mastermind is now taking place. He contrasted this with what he described as other national tragedies under previous governments, claiming that innocent people had been killed without those who ordered or carried out the crimes being brought to justice. The comments come as proceedings connected to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia continue.•
