The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, says 7.1 metric tonnes of gold purchased by the institution are currently being refined in Ghana.According to him, the local refining of the gold is helping Ghana retain fees that would otherwise have been paid to foreign countries where the gold previously had been processed.Speaking on Twitter Spaces on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Mr Gyamfi said the development was contributing to efforts to retain more value from Ghana’s gold industry within the domestic economy.“7.1 metric tonnes of the gold bought by GoldBod is now being refined in Ghana. The refining fees that would have been given to Dubai and other countries are all staying in Ghana to help the management of our economy,” he said.He further said Ghana’s growing refining capacity had positioned the country to participate more meaningfully in the international gold market, pointing to the LBMA accreditation secured by Gold Coast Refinery as a significant development for the sector.Mr Gyamfi said the profiling of licensed buyers was also helping the Board establish where gold entering the formal market was coming from.“We are profiling all persons with a licence to buy gold in Ghana, and it is helping us know where all the gold buys are coming from,” he said.
