By Talla Racing LLC's Holmby (f, 2, Corniche–Candida H., by Lemon Drop Kid) outfinished Three Chimneys Farm's G2 Queen Mary Stakes third Ruiva (Munnings) in Sunday's GII Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar. Making her second start for trainer Bob Baffert, Holmby tracked from third as Ruiva set a :21.91 quarter before drawing within striking distance by the :45.02 half. In a ding-dong battle, the two fought down the stretch and left the others several lengths behind with Holmby just getting up by a neck late. Crazy Hot Mess (Pinehurst) finished third. Holmby's final time for the six furlongs was 1:10.73.An Indiana-bred, Holmby debuted July 18 with a five-furlong win at Del Mar.
