My partner and I are moving to a relatively rural part of Namibia, near Gobabis, for around 6 months. We’re landing in Cape Town in mid-October and are likely to fly home from Cape Town again at the end of April/early May. We’ve been looking into long-term 4x4 rentals in Namibia, but it seems like it could be significantly cheaper to hire a car in Cape Town (where we’ll need to connect through anyway) and drive up to Namibia as part of a road trip. We’d then keep the car for the duration of our stay so we can also explore Namibia during our time off — particularly places like Etosha, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, etc. We won’t have much income while we’re in Namibia, so we’re trying to keep costs as low as possible and avoid eating into our savings unnecessarily. At the moment, we’re considering hiring a Suzuki Jimny from Hertz South Africa. We’ve been quoted a fairly reasonable price, but would really appreciate some advice: Is a Suzuki Jimny suitable for driving in Namibia? We’ll be based near Gobabis and expect to use it for a mixture of normal roads and exploring. The other option we’re considering is a Toyota Hilux, but it’s almost twice the price and presumably significantly more expensive to run/fuel. Are there any Cape Town-based rental companies you’d recommend that offer good rates for long-term rentals and that you’ve had good experiences with? Is there anything else we should consider when hiring a car in South Africa and taking it into Namibia for 6 months? Any issues with insurance, cross-border permissions, mileage limits, etc.? And finally, any general advice for driving/living in Namibia would be very welcome!
