Arsenal’s summer business has given supporters plenty to be positive about, but it has also left some questions unanswered.The pursuit of Vinicius Junior ultimately came to nothing, while another player strongly linked with the Gunners, Morgan Rogers, also failed to arrive.That doesn’t mean Arsenal have had a bad window. Far from it. Bruno Guimaraes is now a Gunner, while Christos Tzolis has already offered glimpses of what he could bring.But could Arsenal have handled some of their other transfer business differently?Here’s my good, bad and ugly of Arsenal’s summer transfer window so far.The Good – Bruno GuimaraesThere is nothing wrong with accentuating the positive.Guimaraes offers a wealth of talent that the Arsenal midfield needs. In addition to being incredibly slippery and press-resistant, the Brazilian has the vision to make line-breaking passes.These are all assets our midfield could benefit from.He provides quality, depth and expertise, and the club is lucky to have him.Whatever criticism I might have about other aspects of Arsenal’s transfer strategy this summer, getting Guimaraes through the door deserves to be firmly placed in the ‘good’ column.Christos TzolisIt’s too early to know exactly what the club has on its hands, but Tzolis has already shown some flashes of quality that suggest he may be able to contribute to the cause.He’s got big shoes to fill, with many looking at him to replace Leandro Trossard, who had an uncanny ability to pop up and score big goals for the club.Although no one expects Tzolis to immediately replicate the numbers he produced in Belgium, there is reason to believe he has a future with the club.The Bad – OutgoingsMuch of the focus this summer has been on who Arsenal are, or aren’t, bringing in.However, that’s not the only business Arsenal need to be doing.There is still a fair amount of bloat on the payroll, including Gabriel Jesus, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira.With the caveat that they are all high-character guys, in my view, the return simply isn’t there.They’ve collectively been on the wage books for too long and Arsenal also have to think about protecting the value of players who may no longer have a significant role to play.Moving players on can be every bit as important as bringing new ones in.The Ugly – Swinging and missing twice?This is where I think questions can legitimately be asked about Arsenal’s approach.Vinicius Jr is not the first high-profile target Arsenal have failed to land this summer.In Vini’s case, it’s difficult to criticise a player for wanting to remain in Madrid with the only European club he’s ever known.My criticism is instead aimed at Andrea Berta and the way Arsenal appear to have approached the situation.Big-name players rarely leave Real Madrid in their prime, and from the outside there always seemed to be a significant possibility that Vini would ultimately remain where he was.Perhaps Arsenal believed differently.But to me, Vini always felt like a pipe dream.That’s not because Arsenal aren’t a big club or aren’t worthy of players of Vini’s stature. It’s because his heart appeared to remain in Madrid.(Photo by Wagner Meier/Getty Images)Could Arsenal have handled the Rogers pursuit differently?That brings me to Morgan Rogers.It’s not necessarily a question of whether Rogers was worth £117million. It’s a question of whether Arsenal could have handled their interest differently.If he really was one of the club’s priority targets, presumably Arsenal had been planning how to make a deal happen for some time.If Berta had a maximum valuation he wasn’t willing to go beyond, that’s perfectly reasonable.My question is whether Arsenal could have tested Villa’s resolve earlier and more decisively.We’ll never know whether an earlier offer might have produced a different outcome, and it’s important not to pretend that we do.But from the outside, the longer the situation continued, the greater the opportunity for circumstances to change or other clubs to become involved.Rogers was also under no obligation to force his way out of Villa simply because Arsenal were interested in him.That’s a credit to the player.If Arsenal’s strategy depended to any degree on Rogers pushing for the transfer himself, then I believe that was a gamble which didn’t pay off.Berta still has time to deliverThen came the Vini Jr saga.So, from my perspective, Berta has now swung and missed twice on premium targets in the same summer.That doesn’t make him a failure, nor does it make Arsenal’s transfer window a bad one. Guimaraes alone is a significant addition, and this was already an excellent team that has improved.But I do think it’s fair to question the manner in which Arsenal approached the Rogers and Vini situations.We’ll never know whether a different approach would have produced different results.There is still time, of course.Perhaps Berta can pull a rabbit out of his hat for Julian Alvarez, or perhaps Arsenal decide that the squad they have assembled is strong enough.The good news is that this is already an excellent team, and it has improved this summer.Only time will tell whether failing to pull off that other ‘big’ deal ultimately matters – or whether the business Arsenal have already done proves more than enough.Reader Opinion: e mccWhat do you think, Gooners?
