CMG: The Growth Engine Is Reaccelerating Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.BATS:CMGstouflacrucoCMG has fallen from roughly $68 to around $33, cutting the stock by more than 50% from its 2024 peak. At the same time, the business is starting to show signs of renewed operating momentum. The Master Buy Scanner V2 has now moved to QUALITY BUY on the monthly timeframe, while the 3-week signal is already fully confirmed. Master Buy Scanner V2 — Monthly Score: 3/3 Action: QUALITY STARTER Decision: QUALITY BUY BUY state: QUALITY ACTIVE Entry quality: GOOD — 65% Setup maturity: QUALITY Position size: STARTER 25% WT cross: TURN Band 1: GREEN Combined: GREEN 4/10 Bands synchronized: YES Cycle: NO The monthly setup is constructive but still early. The bands have synchronized and Band 1 is green, but the WT cross is only turning and the monthly cycle has not fired. That is why the scanner recommends a 25% starter, rather than full exposure. The 3-week chart is considerably stronger: 3/3 score, 90% entry quality, confirmed WT cross, synchronized bands, Green 6/10 Combined reading and a fired cycle. So technically, the shorter long-term timeframe is leading the monthly one. Q2 finally showed improving traffic Chipotle's Q2 2026 revenue increased 9.3% to $3.3B, while comparable restaurant sales grew 2.2%. More importantly, transactions increased 1.0%. That matters because Chipotle had previously been relying more heavily on pricing and restaurant openings. Positive traffic suggests customers are beginning to return rather than growth coming exclusively from higher menu prices. Digital sales also increased to 38.3% of food and beverage revenue, versus 35.5% a year earlier. The store-expansion engine remains powerful Chipotle opened 100 company-owned restaurants in Q2 alone, including 80 with Chipotlanes. For 2026, management expects 350–370 new restaurants, with roughly 80% of new company-owned locations including a Chipotlane. This remains one of the strongest parts of the long-term thesis. Chipotle does not need spectacular same-store sales growth to expand earnings if it can continue opening hundreds of high-return restaurants every year. Chipotlanes are particularly important because management says they improve access while generating stronger new-store sales, margins and returns. Margins are the main weakness The Q2 numbers were not perfect. Operating margin declined from 18.2% to 15.7%, while restaurant-level operating margin fell from 27.4% to 25.2%. Adjusted EPS remained flat at $0.33. Food costs rose because of beef and freight inflation, while labor costs also increased. This explains why the stock still deserves some caution despite improving sales. The bull case requires traffic and new-unit growth to eventually offset these cost pressures. Business quality remains high The scanner gives CMG: Quality score: 2.5/3 — 83% Return on capital: 19.79% Profitability measure: 47.36% Margin trend: -0.67% — ORANGE That negative margin trend is the main quality warning. Otherwise, this remains a business with strong returns, powerful unit economics and a long runway for restaurant expansion. Valuation has improved — but CMG is not cheap The scanner gives valuation only 3/7: Cash yield: 3.74% Business-price multiple: 18.68 Cash-flow multiple: 33.32 Earnings multiple: 30.25 Profit/share: $1.08 At roughly $32.79, CMG is also trading near 30x trailing earnings. So even after a 50% decline, this is not a deep-value setup. Investors are still paying a premium because Chipotle has historically delivered excellent unit growth, strong restaurant economics and substantial long-term earnings growth. The question is whether that premium is now reasonable rather than excessive. I think it is becoming much more interesting. Growth remains the main attraction The scanner gives Chipotle 3.5/4 on growth: 3Y profit growth: 21.31% 3Y sales growth: 11.36% Future profit growth: 0.91% Estimate trend: neutral Management also raised its 2026 comparable-sales outlook after Q2 and now expects low-single-digit growth, alongside the 350–370 planned restaurant openings. The long-term thesis therefore remains: traffic recovery + hundreds of new restaurants + Chipotlane economics + international expansion. Key technical levels Immediate support: $31–$33 Major support: $28–$30 First resistance: $36–$38 Recovery confirmation: $40–$42 Major resistance: $48–$52 Previous highs: approximately $65–$68 The monthly chart does not yet have the fully fired cycle I would want for maximum conviction. But the 3-week signal suggests that the reversal may already be starting underneath the surface. My classification: QUALITY BUY — STARTER POSITION CMG now combines: 3/3 monthly score QUALITY BUY classification Confirmed 3W BUY Improving restaurant traffic 9%+ revenue growth Aggressive restaurant expansion High returns on capital Strong historical earnings growth A valuation dramatically below previous levels The main limitations are: Monthly cycle has not fired Monthly WT cross is still only turning Margins remain under pressure Valuation is still around 30x earnings So I would not treat this as a maximum-conviction entry yet. But unlike a simple oversold bounce, the fundamentals are beginning to improve at the same time as the technical setup turns. Current verdict: QUALITY BUY — STARTER 25%, then build on confirmation. What would you do? A) Start around $33 B) Wait for the monthly cycle to fire C) Wait for confirmation above $38 Master Buy Scanner V2: Not financial advice.
