A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in prison after attempting to flee police on an electric scooter while in possession of cannabis and ketamine.Nicholas Galea, from Pembroke, admitted to the charges after being stopped by police during the night between 4th and 5th August.Officers were on patrol in Pembroke when they spotted Galea riding an electric scooter without a helmet or lights. When they signalled for him to stop, he allegedly sped off and attempted to overtake a car before crashing into a speed bump.After the crash, which left him with a fractured shoulder, officers reportedly noticed a strong smell of cannabis and found ketamine in his possession. He was arrested, and a subsequent search of his home uncovered a weighing scale.Galea was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment before appearing in court.During proceedings, the court heard that the 20-year-old neither works nor studies and is struggling with a serious drug addiction.Magistrate Jean Paul Grech sentenced Galea to one year in prison on the drug-related charges and fined him €3,300 for the driving offences, which included riding without a driving licence or insurance.The court also issued a three-year treatment order aimed at helping him address his drug addiction.•
