Manager of the Triplets Ghetto Kids, Dauda Kavuma, has called on the Ugandan government to establish rehabilitation centres where children living on the streets can receive education, mental health support and opportunities to develop their talents.Kavuma made the call during a gathering he organised at the home of the Triplets Ghetto Kids to celebrate their return from the World Cup. The event also brought together other street-connected children, who were treated to meals, drinks and free clothes.According to Kavuma, some of the clothes were donated to him by friends from abroad, while others belonged to him and the Triplets Ghetto Kids.“I was one on the streets, and I wanted to give these kids a chance for them to know that they’re loved and welcomed too,” he said.Reflecting on the talents he has seen among street children, Kavuma acknowledged that he cannot help every child on the streets but said he wants to do whatever is within his ability to support them.He appealed to the government to create rehabilitation centres where children rescued from the streets can access mental health care, medication and education.“Some of these children are discriminated from schools once they find out that they’re from the streets,” he said.Sacrifice behind the scenes: How Ghetto Kids reached the World CupKavuma believes such centres could provide alternative forms of education tailored to the children’s abilities, including vocational skills such as welding, tailoring and building, as well as opportunities in sports, music and dance.He also argued that traditional schooling may not always be suitable for some of the older children who have spent years on the streets.Some of these kids are way too old to sit in the same class with others.
