Yorgen Fenech was heard telling Melvin Theuma that lead investigator Keith Arnaud “has guts to keep working” despite earning just €1,700 a month, as the court listened to more secret recordings of the two men.The exchange was heard on the recording played in court, with Theuma identifying the words being said.The recordings are among the key pieces of evidence in the case because they capture private conversations between Fenech and Theuma after the 2017 assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Theuma secretly recorded his conversations with Fenech after becoming increasingly fearful about the situation surrounding the murder and the pressure he was under from the men involved.Theuma told the court he was particularly anxious about his son, adding that Fenech would ease his mind whenever he worried about losing him as a result of the situation.On the recording, Fenech is heard telling him: “If you and I remain solid, nothing will happen.”Theuma also mentioned that the hitmen brothers, George and Alfred Degiorgio, would discuss lead investigator Keith Arnaud and despised him, saying “they saw him as a devil”.At one point in the recording, Fenech is heard telling Theuma: “Even the police will relax if the Degiorgios escape.”Defence lawyers objected to Theuma listening through headphones while identifying sections that other people in the courtroom could not make out. They argued that, without transcripts, they had no way of independently verifying or challenging what he was saying. Prosecutors countered that the recordings were important evidence that should be heard by the jury, arguing that poor courtroom audio should not be a reason to discard them and suggesting jurors could be provided with headphones.Theuma’s testimony is ongoing. Today marks his fourth day on the witness stand, with the jury continuing to hear his evidence and the secret recordings as the trial enters its sixth week.•
