While Superman (2025) launched the new DC Universe in theaters, and with sequels and spinoffs including Supergirl (2026), Clayface (2026), and Man of Tomorrow (2027) continuing to build upon the new cinematic shared universe overseen by DC Studios’ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, many DC fans are still calling for the return of the Snyderverse.The Snyderverse is the unofficial name for director Zack Snyder’s three DC Extended Universe films, Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2021). However, the name is also used to refer to the wider DCEU, which includes other titles such as Wonder Woman (2017), Aquaman (2018), Shazam! Although it seems things aren’t that straightforward.Snyder’s three films in particular have garnered a huge following over the years—which is more than what we can say about the rest of the DCEU. Since that Instagram post, however, Snyder has shared many more images just like it—some of Cavill, some of Ben Affleck as Batman, and so on. Turns out he’s simply celebrating his films and the legacy they’ve created. So, as it stands, the DCU really is here to stay.But you can’t blame fans for thinking that DC Studios and Warner Bros. might consider reinstating Snyder’s three films and continuing them in some way, given that Superman (2025) hardly soared at the box office with $618.7 million, and how this year’s Supergirl (2026) was a massive box-office disaster, earning just $126.1 million against its $170–186 million budget.With all that said, a major Snyderverse return has been confirmed.Credit: DC / Warner Bros.A Snyderverse Character Returns… in the DCUSources close to production on the new DCU film Man of Tomorrow (2027) have told Deadline that Xolo Maridueña’s superhero character Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle from the 2023 film Blue Beetle has been confirmed to appear in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel.Obviously, this is going to confuse a lot of DC fans.Speaking on the Michael Rosenbaum podcast Inside of You at the time Blue Beetle (2023) was releasing in theaters, Gunn confirmed that Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes is the first character in the DCU, which launched last year with Superman (2025), saying, “The first DCU character, for sure, Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is Superman,” adding, “It’s a historic role, as Blue Beetle was the first Latino superhero to lead a standalone film in the DC Universe.”While Blue Beetle was not heavily marketed as a DCEU film at the time, it certainly wasn’t marketed as a DCU entry either. And although no other characters from the wider DCEU appear in the film, it is still widely considered to officially be part of that now-defunct timeline.However, it seems it’s the character who’s still canon—whatever that means.Credit: DC Studios / Warner Bros.DCU Canon Is a Complete MessGunn hasn’t been shy about how he’s salvaging characters from the DCEU. In some cases, that even involves bringing back the actors who portrayed them in that continuity, like Maridueña.The animated series Creature Commandos saw actress Viola Davis reprise her role as Amanda Waller, while John Cena returned as Christopher Smith for Season 2 of Peacemaker.Gunn previously said that The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1—for which he was director and showrunner, respectively—could be considered “vague memories” of what happened in the DCEU, with only Creature Commandos onward being completely canon.Credit: DC Studios / Warner Bros. Animation“Nothing is canon before Creature Commandos, but you can think of those other things as vague memories of things that happened, going back even to the first Suicide Squad,” he told Den of Geek last year.As such, several other characters from The Suicide Squad are canon within his new DCU, including Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian’s Polka Dot-Man, and Weasel, with Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, continuing to voice the latter character in Creature Commandos.King Shark, who first appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad (in which he was voiced by Sylvester Stallone), will return in the second season of Creature Commandos (now voiced by Diedrich Bader).Credit: DC StudiosWill the Snyderverse Return?Whether or not the Snyderverse will return remains to be seen.Earlier this year, Zack Snyder told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he hopes that it can return in some way, perhaps as a comic book continuation or as an animated series.He said: “We live in a world where all that is possible. Whatever form it would take, that would be amazing.”For now, the DCU will continue as planned, despite the recent Supergirl disaster. Up next is the “body horror” film Clayface, which releases in theaters this October.In July next year, Man of Tomorrow will fly into theaters.
