Applebee’s allegedly refuses a group of New York customers. Then staff snap their IDs before sending them out: ‘Look at this’

A TikTok video showing a woman claiming that staff at a New Jersey Applebee’s location broke her driver’s license and asked her group to leave has drawn more than 9.2 million views and over 805,300 likes. The video was posted by a TikTok user named Sophia (@sophia_attardi). On-screen text in the clip identifies the location as an Applebee’s in Somers Point, New Jersey. In the video, Sophia holds up a driver’s license that appears to be snapped in half and says, “Applebee’s just like snapped my f–king ID. Look at this.”  Group says they were asked to leave after staff questioned their identification In the video, Sophia says, “We all just got kicked out of Applebee’s because our IDs aren’t allowed apparently.” She captioned the post, “All over the age of 21 btw @Applebee’s Grill + Bar.” Sophia later commented on her own post, writing that she probably should have called the emergency line, but the situation “didn’t feel like a complete emergency.” She said she filed a police report the next day and added, “Applebees will be hearing from me.” @sophia_attardi All over the age of 21 btw @Applebee’s Grill + Bar ♬ Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy – Single Version – The Tams Several commenters reacted strongly to the video. One person wrote, “Go to the police.. that’s highly illegal.” Another said, “Call the cops! Then call corporate!” A third commenter asked, “Isn’t that considered like destruction of government property?” Others questioned the situation, with one writing, “So whats the their side of the story?” and another commenting, “First mistake was going to Applebees.” One commenter offered a different view, saying, “For people saying she should sue, please realize that sometimes the juice is not worth the squeeze.”  Sophia later posted a follow-up video on TikTok explaining what happened in more detail. She said she had not heard back from Applebee’s despite emailing the company. She explained that she and her two friends went to the restaurant for one-dollar margaritas, and their bill ended up being just over three dollars.  @sophia_attardi Applebees update for all who’s concerned ♬ original sound – Sophia According to Sophia, a server checked their IDs first and had no issue. Later, a manager returned and asked to see the IDs again. Sophia said the manager took the IDs and was gone for about 15 minutes, during which time the group finished their food and drinks. This incident follows other reports of customers feeling unwelcome at Applebee’s locations, such as when a Puerto Rican couple was allegedly told they didn’t look like the type to order certain items.  When the manager returned, Sophia said she was told the IDs could not be accepted. Sophia said she tried calling the non-emergency police line, but no one answered. She said she then noticed a crease down the middle of her ID and confronted the manager about it. According to Sophia, the manager admitted to bending the ID to check if it was real. Sophia said her license is from Tennessee, and she was in New Jersey at the time. She said the manager offered her $30 for a new ID and agreed to comp the group’s drinks. Sophia said she did not pursue the matter further at that point because she assumed replacing the ID would be simple. She later said she learned she would need to visit a DMV in person to get a new license, and the nearest one is about 13 hours away in Tennessee. She said she is currently unable to order a replacement online because of the damage to her card. Such customer-service disputes have surfaced elsewhere, like when an NYC woman tried Danny Coop’s Cheesesteaks and found something in her meal, only to be allegedly called a liar by staff.  Sophia said she would like Applebee’s to cover the cost of a flight and a new ID, but said she has not heard from the company. She said pursuing legal action “seems like a lot” and called the situation “annoying,” noting that it started over about three dollars worth of alcohol. She also said that she was the youngest in her group at 23, while her two friends were 24 and 25 and had New York IDs. Sophia said the manager later told her the New York IDs, not her Tennessee license, had been the main concern. Sophia said this did not match what happened, since her ID was the one that was damaged. A user on Just Answer inquired whether destroying someone else’s license constitutes a crime. According to the responding lawyer, this does not rise to the level of a federal offense. In most cases, the person responsible would only be required to reimburse the cost of a replacement license. Commenters on the update video also weighed in on the situation, though Sophia’s original post drew most of the reaction. In her earlier video’s comments, one user wrote, “Isn’t that considered like destruction of government property?” while another said, “Call the cops! Then call corporate!” Applebee’s has not issued a public response to the video as of this writing.
