Scott Eastwood has had his fair share of movie successes, from big Hollywood flicks like Fury and Suicide Squad to romantic favorites like Regretting You and The Longest Ride. As a result, he has established himself as his own kind of star, separate from his father, Clint Eastwood. While he has become such a familiar face, many Swifties can say they knew him back when he was first starting to get buzz, because he starred in Taylor Swift's music video for “Wildest Dreams.” Now the actor is opening up about his experience and why he decided to do that video despite pushback. In an interview on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Eastwood talked about his latest war movie, Lucky Strike, as well as some other highlights from his career. One of these highlights was, of course, acting in a Taylor Swift music video. Eastwood told Shepard, who is a Swiftie himself, that receiving the call from the pop princess asking for him to star was a complete surprise. Even more surprising, Swift called him herself to explain the concept of the “Wildest Dreams” video. He said: She just picked up the phone and called me. She did. …. Well, first off, she called, and I had no, like, pre-warning. You know, a lot of times people are like, ‘Hey, uh, somebody wants to call you.’ And then they call you, right? And you're like, ‘Yeah, okay. I'll take that call.’ But she was like, ‘Hey, this is Taylor Swift.’It’s so cool for Swift to want to call Eastwood herself and explain the concept of the video. This personal phone call ended up being imperative in casting Eastwood, because he explained that his management didn’t want him to do the video in the first place. He said: I remember telling my agents, and none of them wanted me [to do it]. They were like, ‘This is a bad idea. Do not do this.’ They were like, ‘Do not do a Taylor Swift music video.’ And I said, ‘Nah, you know, I don't agree. [I] think that she's cool, and she has a really cool idea for this thing. And I think it's a cool creative thing. So, yeah, let's do it.With Swift’s fame and cultural cachet now, it’s hard to imagine an agent wouldn’t want Eastwood to be in her orbit. At the time, the “Blank Space” singer had just released 1989, which was a fan-favorite Swift era for many. While she was incredibly famous and popular, her audience skewed younger and wasn’t often taken seriously by the media. Thankfully, Eastwood was smart enough to see beyond this, and he was intrigued by how cinematic Swift wanted to make the video, which was inspired by old Hollywood. He explained: I was intrigued because of the [creativity] behind the video mostly, too. She wanted to do like an Out of Africa-type thing, right? And it was like this cinematic film. And you know, the music industry, they don't do that anymore. It's not the '90s, and we don't have these big sort of videos. There's only -- unless you're a couple artists like Taylor Swift that you can do that or afford to make these sort of things. So, for those reasons, Eastwood signed on to “Wildest Dreams,” and it ended up being one of Taylor Swift’s most iconic videos. It tells the story of an old-school actress and her complicated, emotional love affair with her co-star. The two fight, and kiss, and act on camera. The whole thing is set on a Safari movie production, likely inspired by classic films set in Africa like Out of Africa and The African Queen. Following this music video, Swift has cast a lot of famous people to be in her videos; however, this remains one of the most memorable to me. Eastwood has moved on, but this is such an intriguing part of his filmography and proves he has great instincts when it comes to choosing projects.
