The unbeaten treble Group 1 winner Bow Echo has been retired after sustaining an injury in training which will prevent him from racing on. The three-year-old colt had been entered for Sunday's G1 Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques Le Marois in Deauville but he will instead eventually join the roster of stallions at Darley, which is home to his sire, the current champion Night Of Thunder, and his grandsire Dubawi. In a statement confirming the news, the colt's trainer George Boughey said, “It is with great disappointment that we have to announce that Bow Echo has had a setback and will be retired from racing.“It has been the honour of a lifetime to train a horse like Bow Echo, He has given us some extraordinary days and taken everyone involved on a journey we will never forget. To retire unbeaten, having won the 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes says everything about what an exceptional racehorse he has been.”Bow Echo was bred by the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, who died in December 2025. He is out of the Invincible Spirit mare Aristocratic Lady, herself a granddaughter of the G1 Oaks d'Italia winner Zomaradah (Deploy), who is now best remembered as the dam of Dubawi and features in both the top and the bottom half of Bow Echo's pedigree.Liam O'Rourke, Darley's Director of Studs, Stallions and Breeding said, “While it is very disappointing that we will not get to see Bow Echo on a racecourse again, he has been an outstanding flagbearer for his champion sire Night Of Thunder and is no doubt one of the most exciting stallions to retire to stud in recent years.“Although his injury will prevent him from running again, he is otherwise in great health and we are immensely proud of all his achievements.“Our thanks must go to George Boughey and all the team at Craven House, who have handled him superbly throughout his remarkable career.”Bow Echo broke his maiden on debut almost exactly a year ago when winning by four and a half lengths at Newbury. Bow Echo raced exclusively at a mile throughout his career, thereafter winning the Listed Ascendant Stakes at Haydock and the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket last September.His return to the Rowley Mile this spring for his win in the 2,000 Guineas sparked jubilant scenes as Boughey and jockey Billy Loughnane secured their first win in the colts' Classic. This was the first of his three Group 1 victories over the Coolmore-owned Gstaad (Starspangledbanner). Just a short-head separated the two colts in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, and their most recent clash in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood again saw Bow Echo come out on top after navigating his way through some traffic problems in running. Gstaad, who claimed his own Classic success in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, had already been ruled out of a potential rematch in France having picked up an infection through a cut sustained in the Sussex Stakes.Boughey added, “Bow Echo's remarkable story began with his owner-breeder, the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid and it is a great sadness that he was not here to see what a lifetime of breeding was able to produce. Bow Echo's unbelievable constitution and extraordinary ability have set him apart.“We will all miss seeing him at home and on the racecourse but we are incredibly excited for his next chapter and, in time, to see a new generation of his progeny on the racecourse.”Stud plans for Bow Echo will be confirmed at a later date.
